WD HDTV Media player sound

Hi all,

Just bought the newWestern Digital HDTV media player. In particular because it will pay MKV files at 1080P. Most of my stuff which just happens to be 720P plays grate but one or two files have missing sound as the player defaults to Digital audio. Is this something encoded in the file? The player has optical out but I dont have a surround sound system. My samsung TV has an optical port on the back and I wondered if I have to buy a cable to connect the player to the TV...dont think this will work somehow though. Otherwise will I have to get a system that can decode the audio. Dont really want to yet and I am happy at the mo for the TV to output the audio.
