Hi, I'm not too sure if im in the right area tbh but il give it a shot here first

Here goes: my grandad has brought a new HD television with a freeview reciever inbuilt, but due to his area, it doesnt pick up until 2011.

They already had a freeview box, so tried to plug it into the back of the new TV, but it wouldn't pick up anything - no signal.

They plugged then box back into the old tv, and it was fine.

Is there some specifics about what TVs are compatible with what freeview boxes? Or do they need to do something with the aerial? Iv read about aerial upgrades, but it just seems wierd how it only works on an older television.

Your help will be greatly appreciated

well the clue is no freeview till 2011, unless its dual running just now with analogue

its the problem of freeview which doesnt get any better

best getting freesatfromsky at £150 or Skys Pay Once Watch Forever at £75 and cancel Sky after 3 or 4 months

or get freesat from BBC/ITV which is mor expensive

So he is an a no-Freeview area? How did you check? - if it was by postcode then that isn't reliable (and often wrong). The 2011 date is just when the analog signal will be switched off, not when Freeview starts for his area. It's called the DSO (Digital Switch Over) date.

They already had a Freeview box
Ah......so they can get Freeview then!

so tried to plug it into the back of the new TV, but it wouldn't pick up anything - no signal.
Or maybe not? Did you plug the aerial into it??

So which is it? If he has a Freeview box which worked then if you plug the Freeview enabled TV into the SAME aerial connection then it should work. Likewise the Freeview box won't care what TV you have it plugged into.

They plugged then box back into the old tv, and it was fine.
Proves the Freeview box works fine (and you do already have a Freeview signal via the aerial).

No

Or do they need to do something with the aerial? Iv read about aerial upgrades, but it just seems wierd how it only works on an older television.
If the Freeview box works with the aerial you already have then there seems little reason to change it yet.

Are you sure you connected it up properly? Did you select the AV input channel that the Freeview box was plugged into? (or tune it in if using the RF connection)

If your TV has built-in Freeview then you shouldn't need the box. If the box worked OK then there is a Freeview signal at that location so built-in Freeview should also work.(unless you are in a very fringe area with a really tiny signal that the box can pick-up but the built-in can't for some reason).

Lastly, what's the TV? (make, model)

P.S. Niall, why are you pushing satellite at him when he DOES have Freeview reception, otherwise his box wouldn't work!! 2011 is just his local DSO timescale.

As Niall said, I think your problem is in the wiring. I think it's also to do with the source selection on the new telly.

Are you sure about that?
1) you've already been receiving Freeview via the other box, surely
2) 2011 is when the old analogue channels 1-5 get switched off. Freeview is already broadcasting in your area.

Have another read of the instructions for the new TV. Connect the aerial direct from the wall and make sure you select the DTV (Freeview) feature on the TV. Use whatever set-up procedure the manual gives to get the Freeview stations downloaded/tuned.

You could also try the external Freeview box.

Connect the aerial direct to the Freeview box. Connect a SCART cable from the correct output on the FV box to the TV - choose a SCART socket on the TV which has RGB on its label. Make a note of whether the socket is AV1, AV2 etc or Ext1, Ext2 etc. With everything switched on take the TV remote and select the correct AV or Ext input. To confirm the Freeview box signal is the one you are watching try pressing the menu or EPG button on the Freeview box remote. You should see an onscreen menu if you have done everything correctly.

Which tells me I can't get Freeview, yet I can get all 91 channels. At best it is inaccurate, at worst misleading!! Doing it by postcode is little more than guesswork.

bartyj11, FFS forget about the postcode thing!! - if you've had Freeview via the other box connected to the old telly then (and sorry for shouting) IT ALREADY WORKS!!

barty, are you able to call round to your GD's house? If you are trying to help him by phone then the chances are that your GD is expecting the new TV to work like the old one, so that is affecting the way he's thinking when setting up the new TV. Take nothing for granted. Double check everything.

If the box can already pick up Freeview, when plugged into the old tv, then you are in a Freeview area already. DSO switchover in 2011 will mean.....you get a stronger freeview signal, no analogue service. You may need to retune the freeview equipment due to channel changes during the DSO process.

The fact that the box doesnt work when connected to the new tv and that the new tv's internal freeview box doesnt work must mean there is a different problem......are you trying everything of the same aerial socket or aerial wire? if you have more than one aerial, the result from one could be different from the other.

Forget plugging in the original external freeview box in order to get freeview on the new TV - just plug in the aerial cable and do a channel search!

Only when you have this running (or are unable to tune in for some strange reason) do you need to consider the original box - it can of course, be used as asecond digital source for a VCR/DVDR but let's leave the config of that until we know we have a working TV with inbuilt freeview.

On the RC there will be a button marked TV/DTV or similar, a quick check to tell if you're on Analogue or Digital go to BBC1 and press Text if CEEFAX appears on screen you're watching Analogue TV cancel the Text and press the TV/DTV button and then see what happens.

A good Digital Information site is ukfreetv

If you were actually interested, there was a problem with the TV - wiring or something inbuilt - quite possibly the freeview reciever itself.

Which is why it didnt work; they got a new one delivered t'other day.

And i only used the postcode thing to LOOK at, not as gospel.

but yeah, thanks for your help Even if i am annoying in the fact I can't quite get my point across correctly :S
