Given wrong (but better) TV by comet
My receipt says 37AV555DB which is the model that isn't 1080p and is £100 cheaper but my TV is model number 37XV555D which is the dearer one because it's 1080p.
So I've paid £479.99 instead of £579.99. When the guy brought me the TV he had two toshiba boxes and he said is this yours and I just said yes so it looks like I've got someone else's and they've got the £100 cheaper one. so this is all well and good but what I'm wondering is, will my manufacturers warranty be valid when my receipt is for a different model number? Plus I took out 5 year insurance but for a different tv. HELPPPPP!!! Do I keep quiet or ring Comet? |

what about the poor bugger who thinks he has a full hd tv!! I know it's a shame for poor guy who has my telly, but maybe he wont even notice! If comet ring me and want it back maybe they could change their mind cos it was their mistake and I've set it all up now and callibrated it so I might try saying I'm keeping, change my warranty details! If they don't ring though, do you reckon my warranty is void and my insurance? If I hadn't have checked the model number I would have been non the wiser though, but I suppose it's just down to whether or not I can prove that's the TV I was given by comet and it's therefore their error. |

Not my fault they got it wrong though is it? If I hadn't of looked into the model number I'd be none the wiser.
Imagine your car insurance - if it has the wrong registration number on the policy, do you think they would pay out if you ahd an accident?. |

You probably will be if you try and claim on the warranty.

I think the key part is the 5 year insurance you took out.
Manufacturer warranties are somewhat "flexible" in that all they need to know serial number and place/shop of purchase to make sure things match up. As long as you keep the receipt you could give /sell your TV to someone else and it's probably still be honoured for warranities, - even if not totally legit ![]() However the insurance is a policy you have taken out so to be valid you would need to match the purchaser and exact TV - otherwise the insurance company won't honour it, (remember they make money by not paying out.) So I'm pretty sure that the 5 year extended warranty is now worthless, (some - like me - would argue that they're worthless anyway but that's another thread. )Now if the warranty was less than £100 you're quids in - if not you've effectively overpaid for a TV - I suspect this may place your "bargin" in a different light and hopefully encourage you to do the, (IMHO,) right thing and contact Comet ASAP. |

Right, well I think I will wait until the insurance documents get posted out to me and see what they say in them with the model no etc if it's stated. If it is stated then I will do the right thing

Good post, thanks. I see your point about overpaying for a TV as well.
Right, well I think I will wait until the insurance documents get posted out to me and see what they say in them with the model no etc if it's stated. If it is stated then I will do the right thing ![]() - this could actually present a way out. You just tell Comet that when you got the documentation that you did the sensible thing of checking details etc. and realised something was wrong when the details didn't match. You then get them to investigate/resolve matters - absolute worst outcome they say "we gave you the wrong TV pay us the difference" to which you're perfectly entitled to say no, ask for a refund and get them to take the TV at their expense - so you're no worse off. Most likely they'll just swap TVs. On the other hand there's a more than decent chance that they may try to do some kind of deal - say pay £50. But again the ball's in your court as to whether you accept, negotiate or decline in favour of the orginal purchase. Bear in mind Comet will get a fat commission on the extended policy so they will be pretty keen to make sure the sale of TV and warranty sticks. One last point - the extended warranties I've seen tend to have price breaks. For example one premium for a TV costing £300-499 and a higher premium for a £500-699 model. So be careful with regards to any deal you might get offered and how the extended warranty is effected. |

Ok thanks.
i am starting to feel bad now. I mean I don't care if I'm ripping off Comet but the factv that a stranger has paid £100 more for a telly that I have got, it's like he's put £100 towards my TV. Conscience is realising it's not Comet that have been ripped off.. |

even though it is a better tv with 1080p are you going to get the benefit from a full hd set?if you are mainly watching sd pics the av555 may well have given you a better picture lol.

I don't think I have ever checked the model number on my receipt to see if it matches my set. I would just take it for granted I had the model I had chosen in the shop unless there were some glaringly obvious differences.

The simplest thing is to query with Comet the difference in serial number/model number on the receipt compared to the TV.
Let them come to a conclusion and see what happens... if they tell you they've made a mistake and ultimately the TV gets swapped for what you should have you'll be getting what you paid for. Also consider that maybe the delivery driver got an arse kicking for losing a TV / incorrect delivery. Of course it's your conscience ![]() As for proving it's a Comet mistake if/when you make a claim on the guarantee... good luck with that as you'll have a snowballs chance in hell proving a mistake in 3 years time I reckon. |
