Change X Factor to Songwriter's Series
What if they change the format so they only sing the songs they have written. That way we get someone that writes their own songs rather than do poor imitations of other people's songs. I actually think its wrong to sing a well know song as most times people vote for the song and memories it conveys not the actual contestant.
What do everyone think? |

This is the reason I liked Fame Academy- it encouraged the contestants to write their own material.

Then we'd get a load of terrible songs. Songwriting is great but the songs aren't always good.

'Good', undiscovered singer-songwriters? Hens' teeth spring to mind.

Yep they tried that with Fame Acadamy, which was dropped after 2 series because apparently the ratings were poor compared to the Pop Idol format where people didn't have to write their own songs.
I guess the problem is that writing decent songs is much harder than being a decent singer, far fewer people are able to do it. |

I'm in the middle of writing a short story about a singer/songwriter competition. I think there is a market for that kind of show - it would be nice to see original material on show, not just covers. And yup, Laura would still be in it with those pre-recorded tracks. I can't stop listening to them!

Yeah, that would be great!
Personally a great voice it's not enough for me. That's why I rate much higher Austin and Laura than other contesents. These two have the biggest chances to become the artists, other contestant in my eyes would be rather only enterstainers. |

Yes I remember Fame Academy too shame it was axed.
I just hope ITV see the light one day soon and do a similar perhaps bigger show like FA. Yes the songs might be less credible but at least the contestants would do their best for their own material and sing with more passion which is what I think lacks significantly on X Factor.

I've never felt compelled to want music just because I think a singer is a very good technical singer. To me a singer can add a lot to a song, but for me it's always first and foremost about the music and the songs. For me a singer is in effect another form of musical instrument to make up one of the compositional elements of a song. I can't believe how this show keeps calling these contestants 'artists' when most of them are nothing of the sort, or at the very least we're not actually judging them on their artistic creativity. An artist actually creates something. If great music was just about singing technically brilliantly, as this TV show would have us believe, then the pop charts would be full of Opera singers. I think that The X Factor is pretty much just about the fetishisation of technical singing. But for me if the singing has nothing to do with a good song then it's nothing to me. Sometimes I'm not that bothered about how perfect a singer is as long as they add something and the song is great. I don't think I've ever bought into music where in a song I've though "Oh what a magnificent falsetto", or "That vibrato was magnificent, quite sublime". To me it's about the music and the songs. I don't care how amazing a singer is, if the music is pretty dull and uninspired then the perfect technical brilliance of the singing would mean absolutely nothing to me whatsoever. |

The public never voted for the contestants' own songs. The mechanics of the show didn't work like that. |

I think a lot of people appear to have distorted memories of 'Fame Academy'.

Someone else mentioned FA and I responded. I like to see something original with totally original songs. Sadly X Factor, Pop Idol and similar ones are mainly shows revolving around the judges rather than the contestants. They give cover songs so they can judge the contestansts. I just hope one day we get a show were music would speak for itself not a couple of music moguls. There is no harm in hoping I guess...lol

I love the idea. I do think that too much original work would put some people off, but I definitely want to see some creativity.
I suggested this, along with a bunch of other things in this thread: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s...d.php?t=927604 |

It's the Orange unsigned act thing which they show on one of the Freeview channels. It might be on E4 or BBC3 but I can't remember. |

I wouldn't like it.
I like it when I know a song a contestant sings. Sometimes, if I don't know the song, it puts me off the whole performance. |
