Rachel Stevens - quite good!
Just been listening to her last album "Come and Get It" on iTunes - its actually very good! Such a shame it flopped in the charts - all the reviews are outstanding and it is a very good album!
Perhaps she'll make a comeback with Strictly... |

I'm a fan. I loved Come And Get It.
The thing about Rachel was, she had the great songs, but she was just a bit of a boring popstar. |

I loved Rachel for those 2 years she was around?
She did some great tracks, I liked sweet dreams, some girls and negotiate with love. She did quite well but then when the albums flopped she kinda dyed out, I saw her in concert when she was with s club 7. brilliant, |

She had the music, CAGI is one of the best albums I own. But she lacks the personality.

Her songs are good, or were at the time, but after hearing them again recently, they didn't really excite me as they used to. I used to play all those songs a lot.

Yeah the critics really loved it and dare I say it but think Rachel's music was a little before her time. Not much in the way of personality admittedly.

"Sweet Dreams My L.A. ex" was a brilliant tune. But then again, it was written by Cathy Dennis, who's a pop songwriting genius, who wrote "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" for Kylie and "Toxic" for Britney.
Actually I've just Googled her and discovered she wrote "I Kissed A Girl" for Katy Perry too. . The woman's a genius.http://www.guardian.co.uk/theguardia.../15/popandrock As to the issue of "personality." I'd agree, perhaps Rachel was perhaps a bit too "normal," i.e. not having a larger than life personality. But it seems to be the case that to be classed as having a personality in pop these days, you need to be slagging someone else off all the time, like calling Cheryl Cole an "ugly bitch" or whatever, in the case of Lilly Allen. |

Absolutely adored Rachel - still do.
I was amazed when "Come and Get It" flopped - there are so many great songs on there that were never released. Love the hook on "Crazy Boys", the synths on "Secret Garden" and "Funny How". "Funny How" sounds like something Xenomania (Girls Aloud) might come up with, in fact, IIRC Xenomania did work on some of the songs. Really hoping Rachel makes a come back soon !! Steve. |

There's a really great link to a blog here which says everything mentioned in this thread.. that Rachel was clearly four years before her time.

Yeah strange how the public just never really took to Rachel Steven's pop career. She seemed to have all the ingredients to be a success - great looks, decent voice and most importantly, very catchy pop songs. It just didn't work out though so I guess it goes back to the personality issue. As mentioned, Rachel just comes across as "too normal" and we want our popstars to be more exciting and zany like Lady Gaga for example. Yes she isn't original but you can't exactly call her boring either.
Another failed popstar who reminds me of Rachel is Louise Nurding, or Redknapp she is these days. She seemed to have a few moderate hits back in the 90s after leaving Eternal but again failed to really set the charts alight and make the transition into being a major star. Like Rachel, she also had the looks, ok pop songs but again she had a personality issue. People were just not interested by the "girl-next-door" image she promoted of herself. Having good songs just isn't enough I'm afraid, you need to build up a whole new persona too - ask Beyonce who felt the need to create an alter-ego, Sasha Fierce, to make herself appear more interesting. |
