Cracked foot pads

Hi

My wee sheltie has a cracked foot pad on his front right leg. Has anyone any advice on treating them. I have heard using petroleum jelly and wrapping up the foot will help them heal.

Any advice would be grateful.

our old springer's nose and pads used to crack in the winter so we would rub vaseline on them for her.
did the trick - she would lick it all off at first though so be warned - more than one application will probably be needed!

Yes, gently rubbing in vaseline should help. Could he have stepped into something that's agravated his skin such as floor cleaning products or something outside?
If his pad beginS to bleed or become swollen I would definately get him to the vet as IT may be infected.
I'm sure he will be fine.

I don't know if this would help cracked pads and I really think you should telephone the vet for some advice, but for flakey skin feed your little one a treat of oily fish which may help if the pads are a result of dryness

Thanks alot for your replies. I got some vaseline and we are cleaning his paws and applying it each time he goes out. He seems to be a bit better. He objected to the baby bootees quite strongly though !!

No sign of swelling or bleeding thankfully.

We were at the vet last week coz he was limping a wee bit but she couldnt find anything wrong. He is a bit overweight and she suggested that he lose weight !

He is not a happy chappie as all his treats have been stopped.
