Most likely because there's a very busy dedicated Topfield forum, which has good links with the UK distributor, first access to most new firmwares, and a lot of folk who'll generally answer questions within minutes.

Also probably because after the TF5800 we all expected big things from the TF5810... But basically that was a flop becuase it's so full of bugs and not fit for purpose. So new buyers will all go for a Humax instead! Those of us with TF5800's are all fairly happy and don't have much to say, LOL!

Well, I shan't pretend the original 5810 firmware was great, but the latest release (5.15.09+) is actually a lot better, and does in fact work quite well out of the box.

I use mine out of the box - -too busy to set up TAPS etc - -and was a direct replacement for the original 160GB Toppy. No problems to report and got it at a very good price!. I do love the display when it is in library mode palying back something thats been recorded - -very cool

I use mine out of the box, I have had ZERO issues. Well, zero that bother me. The picture goes off momentarily when in chase play whilst actually recording, when the program finishes. That's honestly all I can think of.

okie dokie.

i was gonna get a toppy at one time but i changed me mind and got a humax instead. Apart from the lock ups it's bin fandabbydozy, but i've always wondered if i made the right choice

I've had a Toppy 5800 for two to three years now and sits there peacefully under the tv checking every EPG for a range of keywords I entered in one of the many free Taps available.

Every times it encounters one of my keywords in any title, of any programme of any channel, it sets the timer for it.

In effect the Toppy creates a new channel for me to watch.
A channel made out of all my favourite programs from all the available channels on Freeview.

I don't need to do anything (unless I need to delete or add a new keyword).

That and a picture quality second to none, what else could anyone want!

You made the wrong choice. I initially bought a Humax and I then bought a Topfield. Once I realised how much better the Topfield was, I regretted buying the Humax.

I agree completley. The MyStuff TAP (with it's control timers) and other TAPS turn the already good Topfield into a fantastic machine.

As others have said, mine just gets on with the job. I've had one of the original 80Gb models for getting on for 4 years so the keywords are all set and it just sits there recording what I like.

The sign of any good bit of electronics kit is when people don't feel the need to discuss it: it just does the job.

The only feature mine doesn't have is the ability not to record the same program more than once. Hardly a biggie for me though.

Having said all that, I'm actually gradually moving over to Vista Media Center for various reasons but it's nowhere near as easy to use as the Toppy with MyStuff

i can back that up.
i got my 5800, i donno, 3 or 4 yrs ago. The first 4 months i was forever on the toppy forum...problem after problem. Then suddenly it was fine...i loaded my stuff, which is now probably a very old issue...and its run like a dream ever since.
i have little doubt the same pattern will be experianced with the new model...
ive not looked into it, maybe i should think about a new model. I have my doubts that there is anything out there than can compete with a topfield equipted with "my stuff" for ease and versatility of use.
