Sony Walkmans

I have never had an "expensive" mp3 player before but on my Sony Walkman phone, when there are a large number of music tracks the software slows down to a crawl, this isn't the case on the dedicated players is it?

I had a Sony Walkman for a year, it's brilliant. Unfortunately the stupid SonicStage software that it insists on using went all wrong and managed to mess up the player. It deleted all the tracks then refused to add them again.
Please don't get one. I'm still bitter because I love that player but the software stinks. And you can't drag and drop.

The newer ones don't use SonicStage.

I think it finally dawned on Sony that it was a truly awful piece of software and they binned it. Their newer players are very good and allow drag and drop if you don't want to use dedicated software.

What software are you using with the Sony phone by the way? I used to use a K750i and now have a W950i and I just drag and drop to both. Can't say I've ever hit slowdown problems with either and I have over 25,000 MP3's on the PC and both phones are full (1gb and 4gb respectively).

In that case I withdraw my comment! Get a new one, my old one was brill till the software issue. In fact I may buy a new one!

I use the walkman player on my W910i and have around 1-2GB of music. The music itself plays fine, its just the navigation is a lot slower compared to when it had a few tracks (by software I meant on the phone, it transfers between phone and PC flawlessly).

Looking more deeply into the MP3 players, there are now 3 different models I can't decide between. Does anyone have any experience of the:

Sony NWZ-S639 16GB Walkman - http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/...uner.3498.html

Samsung YP-P2 8GB Bluetooth - http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/...ayer.2689.html

Creative Zen X-FI 8GB - http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/...ayer.3327.html

Thanks for your help, I'm clueless about all of these!

Odd.

The W950i performs the same whether there are 5 or 500 tracks on it?

Maybe the improved the firmware/software a bit on the 950i?

Haven't used any of the above players but the Sony is meant to be good.

And, from the spec on that site:

“Management Software Required - No”

Which is a plus I guess?

no more sonic stage yay!!
very competent sound quality/battery life.
the ones that come with ex headphones are quite good for base headphones so the value is decent.

that being said, there are still niggles on interface and lack of features/usability problems. sometimes its too basic and not user friendly. with a little more care they could have had the ipod killer, but well..sony always manages to f*ck things up it seems. they went in the right direction by dropping sonic stage, but still not quite far enough.

Yeah, I never really minded sonic stage though - it was the only way to get atrac music onto it but it doesn't support atrac anymore does it.

There has just been a price cut so I can get the 16GB version for only £85. I am really tempted to buy it but I still like the Samsung I posted a little earlier and can't decide which!

I have a sony NZW A 828 walkman , the blue tooth one I dont use the bluetooth headphones that come with it as they are not up to much, I only use the bluetooth option for when I am riding my motorbike, but with my set of UE superfi pro earbuds I recon the sound quality is better than my Ipod with the same earbuds, the batterylife is pretty good too,

Thanks. I assume its basically the same as this one but without the bluetooth.

It is very tempting at that very low price, but I keep being drawn to the samsung!

in a way it is, its the same gen, but really the 72x is the same as the 82x models minus blutooth. wireless can have its uses, but it lowers sound quality so i generally dont see the point.

and well the 639 has lousy "noise canceling" headphones which are garbage. if you want noise cancelling either get good canal phones or big ear muff types with the tech, those work, these relaly are a gimmick, esp since its proprietary stuff where only that set works with them. the 72x and others that come with the ex headphones are a better deal.

Thanks. I have decided to go with the Sony, but the model I posted because it is a lot cheaper.

I currently use a cheap pair of headphones, and I'm reasonably happy with the sound (they are Sennheisers but they were only £6) so do you think the supplied headphones will be ok for me?

halfcrown, have a look at the following thread where there are some instructions on how to transfer different video types onto the player. It can play all types of video but they need to be converted first to the player's format.....
