I have 5 months of my T-Mobile contract left (18 month contract). I want to get the iPhone, so this morning I downgraded my T-Mobile tariff to Combi 15 (the cheapest), and I was then going to pay off my contract (I thought I wouldn't do it all in the same conversation though!).

I just spoke with them again and they said it doesn't work like that and I'll have to pay it off as if I was on Flext 35 (my original tariff). Is this true?

So I thought I'd find out about porting my number away from T-Mobile, but keeping my T-Mobile contract (with a new number) for the last 5 months. Again, they said that's not possible.

If anyone can clarify, it would be really appreciated.

It just strikes me as so wrong and so unfair. I've downgraded my tariff to £15/month, which my contract allows me to do, and that's how it'll stay until the end of my contract. So they're going to get another £75 from me, whether I pay it over 5 months or in one go.

From T-Mobile's point of view you signed up for 18months and may well spend over the minimum (£15) each month.
I understand that you want to change the phone, but you committed to the contract and the price of breaking that commitment is in the contract.
The only thing you can do is write a nice polite letter asking if they will let you off with paying the reduced amount.

I'll try again once my price plan change actually goes ahead.

I looked at the contract last night and it doesn't actually state anything about the original tariff. What it says is:

7.2.4. Apart from as described in points 7.2.5 and 7.3.2 below, if You
are terminating whilst You are within Your Minimum Term, a
cancellation charge will apply. We calculate a cancellation charge by
firstly adding together all remaining Monthly Charges (or other
periodic Charges, plus any other Charges stated in the terms and
conditions for any Service) for the remainder of the Minimum Term. We then take off 4% of that figure to get the final charge.
