My Cat Keeps Killing Rats
Billy 577

My Cat Riley keeps bringing back half dead rats and depositing them in my house, can i be in any danger ? as i know rats carry disease. I usually shovel the rat up and throw it over the fence. Can my Cat catch anything from the rats?

I would dispose of the rat a bit more sensibly than that - put in the dustbin? That way you'll keep any disease to a minimum. Have to say, I wouldn't be a fan of having dead rats brought into the house but I'd be pleased my moggy was killing them. Just make sure your tetanus/rabies shots are up to date and more importantly, the same for your cat. I don't think you'll be in any harm really though.

if you chuck the rat over the fence your cat will find it and bring it back. I've had rats, voles, mice, blackbirds, sparrows etc from mine but he's finally learnt that there is no point in bringing them back home because they go straight into the wheelie bin, and he gets put outside for a couple of hours until he's hopefully cleaned himself.

I used to wake up to find dead animals on my pillow yuck.

Just wish the cats around here would kill a few rats, We cannot have a cat due to being allergic, but there are allotments at the back of our house and you can see the rats during the day, the council have put poison down but they seem to be immune to it.

That's what cats do!

Why do you chuck it over the fence? It's probably the same rat that your cat keeps bringing in! (I hope 'over the fence' isn't into someone else's garden!)

Rats need to be disposed of carefully because they DO carry disease. Double bag it at least then throw it in your bin.

No its not the same rat as i find them in the garden on the path etc.. Which bin do i put them in Green for recycling or the grey anything bin , im pretty careful about what i put in my bin , rats might get me fined by the council. Theres nothing over the fence only scrub land so its better off there being recycled by maggots.

Double bag in the grey anything bin.

My late RatBag was originally named 'Shabaa' after the INXS album 'Shaboo-Shabaa'. After his litter mate Shaboo decided to relocate half a mile away and Shabaa continuously brought home bits of rat we renamed him 'RatBag'. I lived in that council cess-pit with that cat for two years and countless rats before moving to a rat free area.

If you live in an area that rats can find easy food (not necessarily slovenly neighbours), then it is like shooting fish in a barrel for a cat. He shouldn't catch anything - though if you have a dog, make sure his Lepto vaccination is up to date and make sure you follow basic hygiene protocols.

LOL, you can't very well recycle a rat.

Never mind the cat, YOU can!

Spread by rat's urine, so make sure you don't touch the bodies and wash any surfaces the body has touched.

I used to have a cat who was all sweetness and light with humans, the perfect gentleman, but it was a different story with the local wildlife. We couldn't step outside without tripping over dead bodies, some of them turned inside out, just to keep his paw in. I used to think I should have named him either Genghis Khan or Vlad the Impaler. Yes, I think Vlad would have been good!

Make sure you worm him regularly-had a "spaghetti surprise" in the litter tray this morning from Betty- she's a great little ratter/mouser too, the other lazy Toms don't seem to have them (I wormed them anyway)so I think it may be something to do with the rats.

Our first cat was the best ratter/mouser/birder I've ever seen - he caught mice most days and rats and even pigeons several times a week. Unfortunately he also stole food, which was a bit embarrassing when he nicked next door's dinner! I kept very quiet about it. Current bunch of cats are completely useless, couldn't catch their own tails, despite spending most of their time outside.

Thankfully i have had no rats this week we have gone back to mice, i always know when hes got one he makes a squeaking noise when he brings them in. Mostly they are babies that quiver in a corner, i try to catch them in a duster as i have been bitten trying to rescue a mouse. 4 rescued this week.

Can I borrow your cat ? We have rats a plenty as we keep chickens.

My husband goes out with his air rifle, and shoots a few. He puts the bodies on the roof of our shed, and the birds come and collect them.

Mine usually just leave them on the patio and the neighbours cats take them home.
