Sony DVD+RW - I deleted a title but it hasn't freed up the space yet(?)

Hi,

I'm a bit confused. I recorded a couple of shows onto a Sony DVD+RW disk and I just deleted one of the titles which I've watched, as I want to free up the space on the disk to record a show tonight, however it still claims to only have 9 minutes left of free space, when the title I deleted was about 1 hour 15 minutes long (around that length anyway).

I tried switching the recorder off (its a Sony RDR-GX350, which hasn't caused me any problems at all otherwise) but that didn't fix it and it gave the usual 'please wait' message after I told it to erase the title and left the menu screen, so I presumed when I went back into 'title list' it'd then say '1hr 25 mins left' but it didn't... I even thought maybe its just out of date info., so I tried taping something but after 9 minutes it said the disk is full...

Is there some other option I have to select before it will free up the space again? otherwise whats the use of a DVD RW when it wont let me re write over it?! Oh and also, I did try accessing the 'unfinalise' option (though I never finalised it to start with) since it says that lets you re-record onto the disk but it said the options not possible with the current disk type or setting *shrug*

Sorry if this is really obvious but I can't think why its not letting me re-write over the disk... any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

a faulty disc perhaps ??

or you need to format the disc?? but that will lose the rest of recordings on the disc, so you might be better buying another

I could format it I guess, I have watched both episodes... hmmm ok I'll give that a go.

I have a set of 5 Sony DVD+RW and 5 Sony DVD-RW disks, im still a bit unclear on the differences between the formats, I just got the different packs as I saw them cheap in the sales pretty much but I haven't recorded much until recently, so im just getting back into using them. I haven't used many of the disks, so I wouldn't know if their faulty but I kind of hope their not!

Thanks for the quick response, I'll try formatting it and see if that fixes it... (though you shouldn't have to, I know). I'm pretty sure the DVD-RW disks work ok as I have deleted some titles from those disks a few days back to give me more space for new recordings and the time left info. changed correctly there, so maybe its the fact its a +RW disk, though both formats are supported, I dunno *shrug*

Ok the formatting seems to have worked, it now says there's 3 hours 4 left but its a shame I had to do that... oh well... it makes me wonder about the other disks, I better check them *sigh* the other one I checked seems to be fine, so hopefully its just that one disk *shrug* anyway thanks

the way +RWs work is a bit odd - they are like a VHS emulation format. If you go into the disc info screen it should show the free space, but basically (on the GXD500) +RWs are a complete waste of time so I've never bothered with them.

DVD-RW formatted as VR mode are the best option in my experience.

You can only free up disc space in +RW discs by deleting the very last title recorded ... if say, you delete the first of two titles recorded ... you cannot regain that disc space ... it just becomes blank. The time remaining stays the same as if the recording was still there.

If that is what happened - the time remaining on the +RW disc was perfectly ok and correct.

I thought you regain space by deleting any title but unfortunately it's only the very last title recorded.
Hope this helps
