Absolutely. When my tomcat died he regressed into a little baby (he was very ill, kept having mini-strokes and convulsions) and just laid in my arms for the whole day, seeking comfort. When we took him to the vets, he knew his time was up, poor soul.
It is very sad, just know you loved your cat very much and it knew it.
