Had to have my beloved sheltie put to sleep this morning aged 13 and a half so am feeling very sad, he had been suffering from Cognitive Dysfunction (canine alzheimers) for the last few months but it was being managed on medication, during the last week though he got steadily worse and his tablets didnt seem to work. So we made the decision to let him go while he still had a bit of dignity, although it was expected it is never easy, and my heart goes out to all those who have lost a pet today or recently
Just wanted to leave this as a memorial and to say that he will be greatly missed , have to go now before I make the keyboard any wetter.

Aw Jules, I'm so sorry for your loss, only other pet owners know the heartache when you lose a beloved member of your family.

I'm sure your lovely dog had a great life with you and you did the kindest thing for him at the end.

Thinking of you today,

DC

Jules, sorry to hear of your sad news. Most of us know how you and your family are feeling. Where as you have idoits out there that dont understand....

I always think when a dog passes away, itll go and play with the other dogs in heaven. (I know 23 year olds shouldnt think that, but it puts me at comfort).

Very sorry to hear that, Jules. When I had to have my dog Sam put down, a friend sent me this poem. I hope it helps.

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
and pain should keep me from my sleep.
Then you must do what must be done,
for this last battle can't be won.

You will be sad I understand,
don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day more than the rest,
your love and friendship stands the test.

We've had so many happy years, what is to come can hold no fears.
Would you want me to suffer?
So when the time comes please let me go,
take me where my needs they'll tend
only stay with me until the end.
And hold me firm and speak to me,
until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see, it is the kindest you can do for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
from pain and suffering I've been saved.
Do not grieve, it should be be you,
who must decide this thing to do.

We've been so close, we too these years,
don't let your heart hold any tears.

OMG!! I can't stop blubbering

Such a poignant poem.

Jules, I'm sending you my condolences and I've just wrote this on another thread of a poster who lost their dear cat.

Remember all the smiles, laughs, funny things and good times you had with him. Remember that you looked after him, and you gave him an amazing life, home and most important, unconditional undying love.

If there is an after life, the only thing he would be sad for is that he'll miss you Jules, but he'll know that it was for the best.

All my love hun xxxx

Oh my god that is just soooo sad. I am crying as I type this as I lost my beloved Percy 9 weeks ago today and this is just such a sweet and sad poem. Putting your beloved animal to sleep is the hardest thing anyone can do, I had never ever done it before and it was sooo hard, but this poem just shows us why we have made these sad decisions.

i know how hard it is i had to put my dog to sleep back in march this year ages 17 years.
he started to have nasty fits which left him in a state where he didnt know where he was .
what i,d like to say is you gave him the best life possible and also didnt allow him to suffer in the end.
my heart goes out to you it does get a little easier but there will always be times when something reminds you and the end result is a load of tissues to dry your eyes.
anyway i hope you can try and remember the good times and try not to dwell on the recent hard times..
all the best daniel

Now can hardly see the keyboard to write this, I am falling apart. I know I will have this to come in the not too distant future and I am dreading the day when I lose my beloved dog.

My heart goes out to you Jules, no words can really ease your pain at this moment I know, but just remember the good times and look back and smile now and then.

Sorry to hear this - its such a hard decision to make, and its so hard to watch a pet suffer.

Pets definetely leave paw prints on our hearts

I'm so sorry for your loss. As a dog owner myself I can only admire your strength. Just remember what it says in Rainbow Bridge, and that your doggie is running free and back to his old self, just waiting around the corner for you. Take care.

It's reading this like this that make me decide it would be best not to have a pet as I would get very upset when the pet eventually died.

I used to house-sit for my old boss when she went on holiday, because she didn't like her cat and dog being left on their own for long periods. The cat didn't bother with me much, but the dog was lovely, I got quite attached to him. I used to play with a ball in the garden with him for ages, and he obviously remembered, as each time I appeared, *months* after the last, he would get excited and run off to get his ball.

I heard that he had to be put to sleep a couple of years ago, and I was upset enough about that, and he wasn't even my dog. So I can't imagine what it must be like when it's such a loyal and loved friend.

Hopefully you have lots of piccies of your pet to look back on. I have a nice little mobile piccie of my doggy friend sitting in his garden which always makes me smile.
