Microwave Reheating Food
I have prepared and frozen some meals for an elderly relative and they what to reheat them using a microwave.
Is this OK and will the food have the same taste and nourishment and more importantly be cooked properly? The foods in questions are: - Beef Stew Mince Beef and Onions Baked Potato Skins with Cheese and Bacon Chicken Casserole Any comments please. |

It depends.
I have a 1000w Microwave but never use that setting when reheating frozen food. e.g. Spag bol Put it on 70% for 5min. Stir it. Another minute or two. Stir it and check it is cooked through. Don't just leave food in for a 10min blast as you can scorch it. Generally the taste won't be as fresh, but still good. It also depends on the microwave and it's power & settings. Probably best to do trial & error for the first few meals. Also couldn't comment on potato skins. I usually stick to bolognaise and stew type meals. |

Actually in my estimation things like spag bol and curries actually do well for being frozen and re-heated.
If it's being defrosted in the microwave it's important to do it very gradually. But as has been said - the main thing is to ensure it's heated right the way through. |

I agree with the poster above, but it would also be better if your relative de-frosted the meals before microwaving them.
The beef meals can be cooked from frozen with no problem, but chicken must be reheated to 72 degrees or above to kill bacteria - important for all of us but especially the elderly. |
