Ask him! After all it's only him who really knows the answer!

Has he been neutered, I know my last dog used to squat after he had been done.

My puppy (5 months) squats but today he tried to cock his leg for the first time! I was so proud! I heard they cock their legs when they reach maturity but not sure how true that is.

He's just effeminate.

Seriously though, my friend's dog did that all the time too, and there was not a thing wrong with him. I guess he just preferred to squat.

That'll be it then.

Boy puppies squat until the testosterone kicks in and they cock to mark their territory.

Neuter before they start to cock, and many won't start as they never get that testosterone kick.

I've heard of dafter things.

Sometimes you need to ask the obvious questions.

Growing up we had a black labrador. He was king of the neighbourhood, strong as an ox, never neutered, and never, ever once cocked his leg, he always squatted.

Maybe his cock was too heavy.

My 4 year old staffie mostly squats. Not neutered and isn't exactly a wimp. Just think he prefers a middle aged wee with little effort..

My last dog rarely lifted his leg, he had bad hip and back leg problems though.

Barney started lifting his leg at about 6 months, I was pathetically excited about it at first. I even rang up my Sister to tell her (surprisingly she wasn't that impressed) Now it's just a pain because he has to stop and lift his leg on every single blade of grass/tree/lamp-post. etc. that he can find.

I always laugh at the difference between my oldest and youngest dog. The youngest one cocks his leg as proud and high as possible, the oldest will stumble a couple of times before thinking bugger it and just stands there, or if you're lucky you'll get a couple of inches of raised leg.

We had a dog who always squatted. My little Westie, who's only 7months, only started cocking his leg recently and that's only cos his bits dropped. And now his walks are full of excited marking opportunities, more a drag than a walk Depends on the dog too, some bigger breeds don't reach maturity until they are 2 or 3, small dogs mature a lot earlier. What kind of dog have you?

That is a fair and valid point. Chinese Crested - peeing as high, far and often as his left leg will allow at 7 months (probably before - we got Hansel at 7 months)

My mate's Leonberger - pee'd like a girl until 2 years

There are some very bizarre posters here :P

A male dog cocks his leg due to increased testosterone production. This isn't learned (by seeing other dogs doing it) but but induced by the surge of testosterone typically around four to five months.

However, that said, some dogs never cock their leg; they're just happy crouching down and never seem to unlock the cocking action - your dog is perfectly normal in this regard.

The Leo in question is magnificent - a real gentle giant. But yes - pee'd like a girl until he was 2. Has a few RCCs and has sired two litters in the intervening years, so he is all dog!!
