Glad I'm not the only one who finds this a bit unnecessarily fascinating. My Welsh Springer (coming up 7 months old) has started to randomly hover his back leg a little sometimes when he pees, but still mainly squats. Mind you, by the way he was going at a pouffe the other day, I think he's already discovered that his little appendage is not for stirring tea with! So, whether it correlates with sexual maturity or not is a bit of a mystery in his case!!!

I actually announced to my OH at top pitch, like I'd just won the lotto, that the small fella had finally dropped his bits He hasn't fully stopped squatting but when he does I'm afraid its the snip for him 
he's quite dominant, Westies can be, and I don't plan to put him to stud. So hopefully he'll make the most of the toy Westie I bought in Primark the other day 
before the job is done in the New Year.

As dogs learn behaviours by watching others, you need to show him how to do it! ie crawl round on all fours and lift your leg at a tree! If you could manage to wee too, even better, as he will sniff it and hopefully wee on top of it.
My dog cocks his leg to mark his territory but squats to have a serious wee! My bitch however also cocks her leg sort of, in a half squat half cock fashion, very strange!
The boring answer to the original question is that the dog was probly from a breeder who had no adult males around, so his only example was bitches.
I'm so glad it's not just me who felt all proud and excited when my dog cocked his leg for the first time!
My mum's friend's labrador is just over 3 years old and he has never cocked his leg before - maybe some dogs just don't.

my dogs nearly 2 now, was done at 6 months but he cocks his leg most of the time, depends on where he wants to pee he will just squat (tho mainly in the back garden)

my dog does that, he is only 2 too
i put it down to laziness, all my dog does is eat and sleep
