"Looking to change your phone?"
SuddenImpulse

In Chavz4u, when they approach you and you say you're just looking, that's what they say in reply.

Anyone know of a good come-back to that which isn't insulting but keeps them at arm's length and lets them know you want to be left alone?

Why not say - I am just looking at the moment I will come and ask for help when/if I need it

"No, just looking, thanks" then carry on with what you are looking at seems to work for me.

I really do hate the way staff in certain shops pester you, if I want to buy something or need advice, I will come and find a member of staff to assist, I don't need them to find me! Then again, in certain shops, particuarly PC World, it's difficult to find a member of staff when you need one!

I work in a phone store in Ireland and we have to be a bit pushy like phones4u. God I HATE it! Cos I hate it being done to me as a customer, which is why I wear earphones when I'm browsing in similar stores!

Go elsewhere. Walk straight out. It's the only way they'll get the message.

I don;'t want to be rude though - and walking out seems like being rude. Plus it's the only vaguely decent phone shop in my area, I'll only end up back in there...

I always say ' No thanks, I'll give you a shout if I need you.' That leaves them nowhere to go with it really....If they do persist just say, 'Well you just blew a sale.' and walk out....

I find the "no thankyou, im just killing time" line works. Even if you then decide you need help im sure there will be at least 15 available staff....

apart from the cashback paid into your acccount deal, theres nothing in store that you cant get online with a bit of shopping around.... basically, choose what useage you need, match up to a handset, and see what you can find and where, they're targetted to push certain phones/tarrifs at certain times

I HATE that kind of pushy sales tactics - and I think it makes the shop look really desperate....

...now I work in a shop (not mobile phones - thankfully) and Im supposed to approach customers and do this kind of thing... but I never do.

We've found that the best way to do it is, not to go upto every customer (unless it becomes clear they require your assistance) and generally be around so that they can ask you something if they need to.

and then just say something like, "if you need anything, just give us a shout"

You can't get a feel for a phone online. You can't ask questions online and get a straightaway answer.

Which is why you should go to Phones4U, get a feel for the phone, ask your questions... then go home and get a better deal on that phone online

I never go in phone shops when I'm looking for a phone service. I walked past the Vodafone shop today, thought of going in and asking about SIM only deals for data but shied away when I saw the besuited scallies running the place. They were the sort of people you wouldn't want to meet on a dark night, dressed in cheap "up in court" suits and jumping three at a time onto anyone who dared enter the Lair of Vodafone...

Where I live, all the networks' shops are pretty much next to each other in the one building so I had a look at them out of interest--Orange was the only one with vaguely normal-looking assistants! If I was to go in a phone shop, I'd rather be served by a geek who spends too much time with phones and computers than a pushy scally looking for commission so he can get a bigger exhaust for his Saxo. I wonder when the people running these shops will realise that friendly, helpful, non-pushy service will get them the signups?

Get over what? Your post was totally pointless and irrelevant.
