The hissing is perfectly normal. The older cat is feeling a bit miffed, so expect your cat to swat the kittens quite regularly. He has to let the youngsters know who is boss (which isn't you ) and letting the kittens know that their place is at the bottom of the pile.

Stroke both the cat and the kittens a lot, as you will be transferring their smells on to each other. I also found with mine, by ignoring the cats and kittens, that their own curiosity got the better of them and they were checking the kittens out, but I had to pretend not to be watching.

It's possible that the adult cat might even be scared of the kittens. Or, more accurately, scared that Mum is just around the corner and is going to suddenly leap to the defence of her babies!

Something else to try is keeping the kittens and the adult cat apart for a while, but going between them (maybe even giving them things to lie on and swapping those things around) so that they become used to each others' smell and become curious about who the new cat(s) they can't see might be.

Although, to be honest, we didn't do all this ourselves, and it was a little strange at first to see an adult cat running away from an 11 week old kitten who found chasing him far too much fun. And a little alarming when he'd sit on her so that just her four paws stuck out and strange squeaking noises came from underneath.

Open one of the doors and put them in.

Patience is needed and don't expect them to settle down quickly. It will work out in the end but you have to let them get to know each other at their own pace. It can take weeks before the older cat is happy but over the years we've introduced no end of cats and kittens to each other and they've always been fine.

I introduced a kitten into my home with my 17yr old cat who spent most of her life on her own - she hissed and then retreated to the cupboard for 2 days after that she was fine - they never really became the best of friends but she learned to tolerate her funny enough i introduced another kitten a year later who was a male and she took to him very quickly and would even allow him to snuggle with her for a minute or 2.
Sadly she passed away earlier this year (she was 19) and it was the other girl cat that mourned for her, kept looking for her and took over the cupboard spot, the boy didn't seem to notice LOL.

If you are trying to introduce cats/kittens to each other, the most important thing to remember is that cats communicate by scent. At first you should keep them apart in separate rooms but transfer the scent of each cat by stroking one then the other, by swapping bedding or using a cloth to rub over one cat then take to the other cat & vice versa. After a few days you can let them see each other but at a distance & gradually reduce the distance provided that they are comfortable together.

At all times both cats should have a safe haven in the house that they can call their own & where the other cat doesn't go. It can take time but most cats don't want to fight or risk injury so they should eventually sort it out.

I can recommend excellent books by the feline behaviourist, Vicky Halls. They are aimed at cat owners rather than just professional behaviourists & her advice is very sound.

Good luck ~ even if your cats don't become best friends, you should be able to get to a stage where they can tolerate beingin the same room together without any hostility.

when we introduced our 2 kittens to our older two -

firstly our older two saw the 2 kittens through the glass door and watched then for a bout a day.

Then we brought the elder 2 in to the same room - the kittens wanted to play with the the older 2, who hissed and ran off.
a few days like this things settled down and they tolerate each other now

Totally ignore the new cat, but make a big fuss of the old one.
