Legally I would think so - unless he's going to claim it's constructive dismissal.

He might lose it. I daresay he took that into consideration. Not the end of the world for him though.

Contractually almost certainly but I imagine the Beeb will come to some arrangement.

They'd be foolish not to.

They've had more than their moneys worth from him.

They should give him a bonus all the extra publicity, I mean it was on Newsight!

I don't know the specific SCD position, but I know someone who's been on a similar show. The deal there was that contract specifies what you have to do, and if you break those terms you don't get the cash. But realistically that's never imposed unless there's a lot of bad feeling. It's not worth the adverse publicity and upsetting the 'star' (they're worth a lot more to you if they co-operate!).

Like him or not, John earned a heck of a lot of publicity for the show, he's appeared on all the BBC shows to discuss his decision, and he's dancing this week rather than walking off in a strop. There's no way they'll refuse to pay him. My guess is that he'll get a slightly reduced amount, probably proportionate to the amount of weeks of the show he's 'missing'.

I also think if you end up upsetting a star they can go to the media and really tell the truth about the show. I am sure John has had a lot of negative comments from other members of the show, not only the judges and he could tell us all a lot, if he wanted to!! Personally I think they are all too desperate to win and it is no longer fun.

Yeah, that makes sense. I mean, if you do a show off your face on drink or drugs, or fail to turn up consistently for rehearsals, or anything that gets in the way of the making of the show, then that's one thing - but this is a different kettle of fish altogether.

John's clearly spent two months working on the show, his actions have garnered a great deal of publicity for SCD and he's done nothing to besmirch the integrity of the programme or its personnel. If I were the BBC bosses, I'd take that into consideration when deciding how much of his fee to demand back.

The political correspondent has a contract to give after-dinner speeches and show off his dance skills on a cruise that includes a trip through the Panama Canal.

The trip begins six days after his last appearance on the BBC1 talent show, on Saturday night, and has prompted speculation he quit because he had expected to be voted out by viewers before the holiday started.

Sergeant, 64, has denied there is any connection between the trip and his decision to leave the programme, whose final episode will be broadcast on the Saturday before Christmas.

"I do have a contract with a cruise liner to take me through the Panama Canal in a couple of weeks, but that didn't have anything to do with it," he insisted.

He will appear on the P&O vessel Oceana, which is scheduled to visit nine countries in 14 days. A spokesman for P&O said: "No doubt John will give some tango tips."

Somehow, I think he weighed it all up and decided to go for the bigger money....

Funny about the timing though........
