Do you ever ask for a 'doggie bag' in restaurants?
An ex of mine used to do it all the time if we ate somewhere expensive but I don't usually leave enough food for it to be an issue!
Do you ask to take home leftovers when you eat out or would you be too embarrassed?

Lots of Restaurants refuse now. Stuff about not storing it properly.. health and safety and food standards. Someone might get an upset tummy and sue...

Yes i do. But last week i was in a Korean restaurant, so i didn't think it was appropriate to ask for a doggie bag.
![]() I didn't wanna spoil a good evening by getting home and discovering a collar in my polythene bag.

THere is never enough left on my plate to warrant asking for a doggie bag.

I did it recently in an Indian restaurant. There were three of us and the main meals were imense. Certainly enough for two per portion, plus naans and chips.
The others seemed too embarrased but I was only too happy to take all the leftovers in a doggie bag. Got at least another 3 meals out of it. |

It's yours.
You've paid for it. Have it. What have you got to be embarrassed about? |

A few friends and I went out once to a restaurant . The meals were huge and because we were gabbing and drinking we hardly touched the food. We asked for a doggie bag and they scraped all the food off all the plates into one big bag
![]() Needless to say we didn't eat it . ![]() In the US its just a normal thing to have a doggie bag they will even ask you if you want one. |

Depends where I am eating!!
If it was a Chinese or Indian then I have done and would again ask to take any left overs. I wouldn't, however, ask for half and steak and some chips to be bagged up for me

I find in America everyone asks for them and the wait staff will even prompt you if you want one. But I wouldn't do it here unless prompted.

I suppose you have paid for it so you might as well keep it. |

I find it a bit weird really - the idea of re-heated food that I haven't liked enough to eat the whole of first time? No thanks! I'm not a wasteful person but I don't generally over order to the point of needing to take some home and also my OH is a human vacuum so he can normally get rid of anything left on my plate!

Slightly off-topic but my wife's Filipino and if we have a party everyone gets a "doggy bag" with food that's left.
It's their tradition apparently. There's nothing left for me to eat up next day which annoys me a bit when she cooks for the 5000 usually.

Actually my wife usually just slips food in to a tissue instead, say half a steak or chicken!

I have no qualms about asking to take food home. Indian restaurants - which normally do take-out too anyway - seem to have no problem.
A friend and I recently went to a mexican restaurant and ordered a skillet meal for two. There was so much left we asked for a "bag" and when we got home discovered that not only had they given us the remains of the skillet stew they had also given us fresh salad, refried beans and tortillas to go with it. How is that for generous service! |
