UK Reality TV changed today forever

and it's a great shame. The history of UK reality/celeb shows has been littered with the likes of Kim on Dancing On Ice, Daniel Evans on X Factor, Chris Parker/Kate Garroway on Strictly, etc etc ..... after today it's clear that ANY celeb on ANY show being kept in due to the public vote, however rubbish they are, will be put under pressure to withdraw... and it truly stinks.. the end of a format is near.

Even if you're right, so what?

So we go and watch something else or go and spot trains or give the cat a good kicking or....I know...take up dancing!

RTV really isn't important in the scheme of things.

You have to be joking! The producers couldn't have written this sort of publicity, they'll be loving it! And no doubt producers of other reality shows will be studying every word to see how they can get some similar action in their shows!

I think strictly come dancing will lose viewers and votes. Why vote if your vote is not respected by the programme

I agree with the OP I think on all shows the judges go overboard with the comments, and they dont seem fair and are sometimes just offensive...or maybe the viewers are just beginning to tire of it

The 'programme' hasn't kicked John out - he decided to walk.

Walk? We the more astute viewers call it pushed.

I don't think SCD will lose votes for any length of time to be honest.

Yes the judges and certain dancers were reasoning with the public to vote for the "better" dancer (as they have done in many previous seasons) and I've said their criticisms could be better put sometimes, but the fact remains they are there to do a job, and have their opinions listened to (or not as the case may be) by the viewers.

I also think that the only person who has disrespected the voters is John Sergeant himself. I know his position has been very difficult the last 2 weeks but the fact remains he - like everyone saved in the competition has been saved by the voters. Good performance or bad. Judges criticisms or not.

I've said to myself that I would prefer if John went but that is my opinion. I chose not to vote for him and Kristina but I appreciate those who did are entitled to their opinion. I also think that he would nothave made the final. But thats bye the bye........

He, imo should have got on with what he has been doing for the last 9 weeks. Doing entertaining dances with Kristina and let the public decide. After all, that is whats SCD is about. Its not a "pick and choose" and go when the going gets tough, and as for the"it's hard to pick yourself up", I'm not convinced by that argument at all.

Look at Heather and her 4 dance offs.........

It is the advent of the sob story or the excessive use of personal stories that has led to the situation John has found himself in. The media feed off these rather than actually the dancing or singing or whatever it is the contestant is supposed to be doing.

Just look at who has won the recent talent contests:

- Paul Potts - uncool guy with wonky teeth and a half decent voice.
- George Sampson - young lad brought up by a single mother
- Jodie Prenger - obese girl who lost weight to fulfill her dream to sing
- Leon Jackson - again young lad who again was brought up by a single monther

They all have the underdog tag which brings in the votes. Certainly the last three weren't the best talent on the show. John by setting himself up as the likeable underdog on this show pulled in exactly the same vote.

Also think that the audience for this show has changed a little as it has grown. I noticed the same with Apprentice when it went to BBC1. The forum on here changed significantly in that business element seemed to be lost in amongst the sensationalised hype. Thankfully it is not down to public vote as the underdog would win rather than best for the job.

there are some celebs and nobodies who would gratefully sit through the press coverage and slagging off that john got and not drop out
I;m sure that's a good thing though.

I agree but for me personally today is the day I have realised that I am not really supposed to vote for my favourite in any competition, but only supposed to vote for my favourite should it agree with the powers that be. I genuinely enjoyed John and Krystina's performances more than any of the others and that was my sole reason for voting for them. I have always believed there is more to dance (or music or art) than technical excellence, and that personality, fun, charm, humour, entertainment and maybe most of all emotion are part of this experience. It seems that John and Krystina thought so too. But according to James, Arlene, some posters on here and others that view point isn't allowed. And today after a week of vicious and nasty comments about John, James and Co won. I realised I was supposed to vote for the technical best dancers even though I sometimes found them dull (SILLY ME!!!). There is therefore, as you say, no place for the John's of this world in such programmes/competitions, or for viewers/voters like me. Yes, I think it's a great shame.
