IP Vision has announced a new hybrid set-top box which can be used to access the complete range of Freeview channels, acts as a digital video recorder (DVR), as well as being able to access a range of video on demand content over the Internet.

The company is keen to point out that this is a subscription-free, operator independent service, unlike those from the likes of BT, Virgin Media and Tiscali. It can be used with any broadband provider.

I got it after considering Bt Vision which I cannot afford plus I'm with another phone company. It really isn't an issue that it has one tuner, I have a freeview + box anyway. I use Fetch TV for on demand stuff when I fancy it.

well I suprised myself actually! i was sitting one evening the other week channel hopping and it was on one of the auction channels cheaper than on the fetch tv website, so I just thought i'd give it a go. I already have an archos tv+ box which I use for vod, but mostly for using on my pc.

But I was considering getting bt vision next year, but it's really expensive and I would have to switch to BT again. The fetch box isn't bad, it's not perfect in that it won't satisfy someone who is constantly recording stuff, but for me it does the job fine.

There is recently released movies for rent, web tv streaming (free), euronews (free), it keeps me occupied when i'm bored. But it's flaw is that you have to buy each individual thing which if you use it a lot over the week like i did beacuse I was playing with it, you might get a surprise when you get you VISA bill

I thought this company was keeping a low profile but it looks to be hanging on in there and has signed a deal with National Geographic.

One to watch, I could see a broadband provider re-badging this service if Fetch can secure more content deals like this.

Out of interest, how much does it cost to view different types of program, roughly?

It really depends, prices range for TV shows 49p, 99p older movies 1.99 and 3.49 for new release movies. However periodically there are discounts, like january's sale in which everything was half price.

The costing sounds comparable to BTVision.

cheers for the pics!

at least its a service that doesn't rely on being tied into a specific service.

i mean Virgin broadband is unlimited so anyone who hasn't got VM digital could look at this option, they keep their broadband but get the IPTV digital service....

i hope no phone company snaps this one up.

Thats why I took it, I was going to get Bt Vision but I didn't want to switch phone company or broadband. I think it's great, and the customer service is excellent. And you don't get ripped off like BT Vision users do!

Theres alway's great choice, if ever theres a dull moment on freeview, on goes Fetch and bish bash I've found something to watch.

on occasion there is free content but it is strictly pay per view. The box cost £107 bargain I think it's a great service, though their website could do with an overhaul to show newbies whats on offer.

hmmm, I bet it goes tits up when another user jumps on the line or you get congestion at the exchange. I also wonder how compressed it all is - I see you watch it on an old square tube CRT which helps to hide a multitude if possible issues.

Plus it's only got one tuner so that drops it straight to the bottom of the pile when comparing it to other PVRs.

If it works for you thats great - I just think others need to be aware that it may not work as well for them.

Well funny story (well not so funny really) I thought I'd treat myself to and LCD TV at xmas and got a Samsung F86 I was using Fetch with it and the picture was super sharp lovely. Then!!!!!!! the TV died, I don't know what I did with it, either I looked it wrong in it's third eye, I have no idea, but it died. So the retailer I bought it from has none in stock so I have to wait until they get more in.

As I mentioned I've had no issues with my service, there hasn't been any congestion issues I've noticed. I suppose it really depends upon the ISP. But you don't have to stream right away, you can just download and watch within the 7 day licence period. The compression isn't pixeled, everything is in excellent quality. Yes the one tuner thing is a downer, but it's price overall was less than any of the other platforms I considered, and I have a freeview+ box with two tuners already, so no big issue really.

Not to step on a BT Visionist toes, but the content and service is the same as BT Vision, everything is supplied through Entriq who supply BT Vision. The plus is, no need to use BT and no contract!
