I-Phone 3G Jailbreak questions
Dutch1/4Owen
21-11-2008
Hi All

I have an Iphone 3G as my company mobile.

The question I am asking is:

If I jailbreak my phone will I still be able to use use all the functions that I currently have. ie. Apps store etc with my apple ID, visual voicemail and any other bolt on funtions that come with the O2 Iphone contract.

Sorry if this has already been asked but I cannot seem to pin down answers for this and the last thing I need is to brick my work phone.

Cheers all.

Jailbreaking leaves everything else intact. No features are disabled. I'd recommend Quickpwn to jailbreak.

However I'd wait a few days before you jailbreak, 2.2 iPhone firmware has just been released so wait for a version of quickpwn that allows you to jailbreak 2.2. Jailbreaking. Jailbreaking if you're still on 2.1 then updating to 2.2 would remove the jailbreak and any apps etc.

Keep an eye on http://thebigboss.org/ for news of new versions of quickpwn as well as guides on how to do everything.

Many thanks MrKev.

Can't believe I haven't come across this site before.

Already updated Iphone software via Itunes so will have to wait for new jailbreak to appear, ho-hum!

Cheers

In case anyone is interested there is an updated version of quickpwn supporting 2.2

Very simple to do.

Only had my iPhone a couple of days, not up to date with this jailbreaking. Could anyone give me a quick summary of what it is and what is so good about it ie. would I get 'free' apps and can you drag n drop files on the iPhone instead of going through iTunes?

I've noticed you can download things from websites if the iPhone is jailbroken, but how do you put these on the phone if you still have to go through iTunes?

I'm not a complete moron when it comes to doing technical things, but is there a 'dummies guide' on how to do it?

EDIT:

I've just had a look at that site and it seems straight forward, however, on the firmware page there is only iPhone 2g firmware for 'pwnage'. Can I not jailbreak my 3g?

That firmware link is marked as "custom". Just select the firmware that applies to you from the top of the page. For me it was iPhone 3G, V2.2.

Everything worked a treat and I am now enjoying customising my iPhones looks, functionality and downloading 3rd party apps that Apple try to block by not allowing them in the apps store.

Checkout Winterboard for changing themes and stuff, Bossprefs for quick access to wifi,bluetooth,3g etc settings, all on one page and mobile finder to enable file system browsing on your phone.

Also http://code.google.com/p/iphonebrowser/downloads/list
is a nice app on the PC to enable file browsing and management.

Enjoy and you or anyone else wanna post any good apps that they have found please feel free!!

I gave it a quick try with my 3G Iphone yesterday but after Jail breaking my phone I kept having net connection problems so I restored my phone back to the official firmware earlier so it's working great again now.

The only reason to use pwnage tool over quickpwn is if you want a soft-unlock. Seeing as most people will have upgraded to 2.2 already just pick quickpwn.

Some essentiall apps:

Winterboard - Theme app, just brilliant

Cycorder - Video recording, great

Five Icon Dock - lets you have... well, 5 icons on the dock.

Make It Mine - edit network operator top left

SBSettings - great little app. You swipe your finger across the status bar at the top of the screen from within ANY app or on the homescreen to get toggle switches for things like bluetooth, wifi, 3G, Edge etc. So useful for saving battery and switching stuff on when you need it. Essentially it's the new bossprefs.

Emoji - enables little emoticons for use with text messages. Install then enable the japanese emoji keyboard in prefs. Can send to any modern phone.

MXTube - Download YouTube vids to keep and play.

Categories - Put apps into folders on your homescreen. Organise etc

Open SSH - sftp to your iPhone. browse it, etc.

VLC 4 iPhone - listen to/play more video formats including streaming wmv. A little rough at the moment.

I would like to jailbreak my iphone 3g , I plan to install the v2.2 software but i don't know what to do from there as i would like the option to restore the firmware at any time and also not loose any of my messages and contacts,

is it possible?

Thanks

Follow that guide as I posted above. Upgrade to 2.2 first.

You shouldn't lose anything but backup anything you'd want to save anyway. That should be what you do when you make firmware changes (official updates too - not just jailbreaking).

Getting rid of it is as simple as restoring with itunes.

I managed to Jailbreak my iPhone 3g easily with that guide thanks guys, but I restored it yesterday as I just couldn't find any use of it - and found my sms screen loaded really slowly.

Good for those who can make use of it, not really for me though.

Jailbreaking shouldn't affect your SMS screen at all - none of the SMS app code is changed, nor are any background processes added. Slow SMS loading is more likely to be memory in use from apps like Phone, Mail, Safari, and iPod (They all run in the background even when you close them).

Of course it's your choice but I'd say Jailbreaking is worth it just for the customisation winterboard allows and for cycorder.

I am planning no restore my iphone, i do not really use the features or programs from the jailbreak, although i am slightly worried now. A friend told me his friend went to the Apple store because of a problem and they told him 'You jailbroke it on this date and restored it this date'
They told him that they get data sent every so minutes that shows this.

Talking bollocks?
It could be true, i mean, if you are downloading from a source on the jailbreak app then they can see this from your data usage?

Utter rubbish.

Nothing gets sent to Apple and they cannot see what you download over o2's network or your wifi - it would be illegal to do so without a court order.

As long as you do a full restore and then a reset (from prefs) there is no way you can tell if a phone has been jailbroken or not.

Thanks, thats made me feel loads better.

So how would i go about this restore,
i want to do it just for my sake of mind if it did break at all and i could not do it at the time for any reason.
but probably wont it my contacts/sms are lost.

You will lose anything on the handset so sync - sms messages cannot be saved though.

1. Do a sync with itunes (contacts, bookmarks etc)
2. Not 100% needed but you can also do a handset reset if you wish - settings > general > reset > Erase All Content and Settings (takes a while)
3. Choose restore from itunes in your iPhone's main page
