Egg nog
I've just posted elsewhere on the site that I like egg nog. So, does the thought of that raw egg make you heave or are you thinking, "I really fancy an egg nog at this very minute."
My recipe is pretty basic: an egg (of course!), a teaspoon of sugar, a pinch of salt, a smidgeon of ground nutmeg, a dash of sherry and half a pint or so of milk, cold from the fridge - all whisked together and then quaffed with delight. |

The eggs don't have to be cooked - you separate the whites and the yolks - the yolks get beaten into the recipe, and you can beat the egg whites till they're stiff, and fold into the drink if you like.
I often make a gorgeously alcoholic chocolate mousse that uses eggs but isn't cooked. |

It is, the eggs are supposed to be cooked, not left raw, not really sure what recipe the OP is using, but think it would make me ill!

If the eggs are cooked that's custard not egg nog. The OP's recipe is basically correct but often a slug of rum is added. I love eggnog made with egg, double cream, a short slug and nutmeg. Raw egg is the way to go.
I think i'd have to pass on raw egg nog, don't fancy salmonella... and i'm well aware of what custard is thanks. Method 1. Place the milk, eggs, sugar and vanilla pod in a medium pan and heat gently, without boiling, until the mixture thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon. 2. The egg nog can be chilled at this stage or served hot. 3. To serve, scatter the cherries in the bottom of each serving glass. Divide the brandy between the glasses and pour the egg nog over. Dust with cocoa powder and serve. |

That's what I always thought it was, although I would put nutmeg on the top rather than cocoa powder. Might actually give that recipe a go

I had eggnog in Canada a couple of Christmases ago... It was quite nice, although I think the second time I had it I did feel slightly ill, probably because I drank it a little fast!
It was available in cartons and was non-alcoholic... and of course in Canada everything was in French as well as English, including the eggnog - which translated into "chicken milk" (sounds a bit less appetising!) |
