Why have all the soap ratings in the past week gone on a strong decline?

Errr...no maybe because the last three days have been the warmest days of the year thus far also add in that Corrie and EE had Champions league to contend with.
The Champions League and hot weather could account to about 200,000 viewers but not a million. |

Agent F - I read through the posts in order, and if one catches my eye, I reply there and then. I can't be bothered reading on to see if anyone else has made the same point!

No, it's because of that and there is nothing 'vital' to watch this week on any of the soaps really and things are getting boring.
The Champions League and hot weather could account to about 200,000 viewers but not a million. Plus a peak of 10m watched champions league on tuesday, you really think that would just drop 200k of eastenders. If it's a nice day, I'd rather go out, and catch the soaps or any other programme at a later time or date. If you looked at every year before now, you'd see the ratings for the soaps fall quite dramatically over April to July |

The soaps always decline about this time of year - into May.
I suppose its because its still light when most of them air now. |

It was the warmest Friday night of the year - people are starting to enjoy going outside when they can. Considering that, I thought both BBC ONE and ITV1's output did pretty well. EastEnders had over 40% of the audience, both Corries were respectable - the 7.30pm surely getting over 9 million overall - and both Benidorm and My Family had over 5.5 million viewers.
I think ITV1 should give Teenage Kicks a second chance. It looks pretty awful, but they really need comedy right now and might as well do it. Its just timeslotted wrongly, and its still doing better than Moving Wallpaper/Echo Beach did in the 9.00-10.00pm slot anyway. I think they should show it early on a Sunday evening - around 5.30-7.30pm before the main drama of the evening begins. |

Nice to see some sitcoms coming up. I was wondering where The Frank Skinner Show had got to. He was quite prolific on ITV1 for a while, with a series every year or so, but he seems to have slipped back into his BBC pattern of long gaps between series:
Autumn 1995, Winter 1997, Spring 1999. |

I dunno if this has been mentioned, but although My Family beat Benidorm when head to head during its season premiere in the overnights, Benidorm came out on top in the officials. Here are the overnights and officials:
name......overnight...official My Family: 5.9m ---> 5.56m Benidorm: 5.6m ---> 5.59m But, My Family did get a lot of viewers for its repeat on the Sunday. |

Annoying that due to the BBC putting it on so early, Doctor Who suffers. Great ratings overall though!

All ratings were down as expected, but BGT held up well as the rest of their peaktime schedule started to crumble. However 5.2 million for M&M is still an excellent figure and one of their best rating shows at the moment. It's still good enough to warrant a second series-even if it drops to around 4.5 I'd guess, as there's not much Saturday ITV shows out there at the moment. I actually expected Pushing Daisies to drop more viewers and I think next week it'll definetely level off. On the bright side an 18% share against Casualty is still good.
BBC1's schedule still remains strong and the lottery is holding up well against BGT-probably the best show to schedule against it imo. Love Soup seems to be attracting below average figures, but it's remaining very consistent-one of the most consistent shows at the moment. FIVE got a look in with CSI NY and the NCIS repeats and CH4 pulled in some decent shares for the early slots, but Grand Designs repeats and ER aren't performing for them. BBC2 also performed decently. |

Doctor Who is clearly being damaged by the BBC ONE schedule. I think when it goes on a break until 2009 it should be brought back from January, continuing on from the Christmas episode - it could easily get over 10 million then. Its a shame because the BBC is wasting one of their best programmes to prop-up a one-off talent show. O well. Britain's Got Talent is incredibly strong still.

Funny how little things change. I've just been looking back at this thread to a year ago when people were moaning about the BBC using Doctor Who to prop up a talent show. A year on and they're still at it.
In fairness, Doctor Who ratings have always been a bit up and down. Might still top 7 million with the timeshifts and with the 1 million+ it gets for the BBC Three repeat - it still does pretty good business for them. I'm sure it'll bounce back later in the series. Rose's return around episode 11could be a biggie if they hype it up like I suspect they might. |

Ratings down across the board. I hope PD and DW pick up, but I'm glad that IDA isn't going too well as it just seems like a tired format.

Ratings generally down which isn't surprising if the weather was anything like it was up here. Got Talent still doing really well, in some ways I expect that its biggest competition (against 1 vs 100) will be the weather. I thought last night was definitely the weakest but next week looks really good. Quite an alarming drop for All Star Mr and Mrs after holding steady for two weeks.
Pushing Daisies will hopefully level off now. |
