A long article with a lot of figures but some key points:

BBC2's share is down significantly year on year
BBC1 & ITV1 are also down slightly
Ch 4 is down quite a lot

BBC1 has lost a lot of viewers in the 16-34 bracket as has Channel 4 year on year
ITV1 is up slightly in 16-34's year on year

It must concern ITV a touch to see its peaktime share drop 5.8% in relation to just 0.1% for BBC1. As such ITV1 is just 0.6% ahead of BBC1-taking peaktime as the period 7.00 to 10.30.
Its apparent that ITV1 can hit huge peaks but does struggle for the consistancy of BBC1.

ITV will be pleased that their share fell the least compared with the big 5

They will also be pleased that the gap between them and their nearest commercial rival is actually getting bigger, they are still way out in front as the number 1 commercial network. A few years go when Big Brother was beating Love Island in prime time, people predicted it would go the other way

Thought these may be of interest. Recently been announced that Big Brother is to be axed over there due to falling ratings. Looks like they made the right decision.

Seems like current affairs & news are the biggest ratings shows. I'm surprised that there are no UK shows in there though.

The ratings are a fraction of what the UK ratings but Australia only has a population of 21m compared to the UK's 60m which has an effect on ratings in general.

It seems that American shows perform very well like NCIS although Aussie dramas have made a comeback with City Homicide and Sea Patrol pulling in decent numbers.

I think there are cycles that channels go through. Ch 4 is trying to go upmarket. A year ago the wouldn't have devoted two hours to Quoran on Monday night. Five should be worried that the CSI franchise is starting to age & actors are leaving the show.

For ITV the positives are the weekday daytime schedule improving, more 16-34 viewers. The negatives are primetime total share dropping & weekends being too dependent on a couple of hit shows.

On BBC1 its clear they held primetime share by going after older viewers. Their 16-34 numbers have dropped a fair bit, so the costume drama orgy is delivering big numbers, but disproportionately older viewers.

As for BBC2, its seems rudderless & without purpose at the moment. Take away Top Gear and its really just a BBC1/3/4 overflow channel, apart from NewsNight in the evenings.

in Oz its not their ratings period IIRC, the big shows all start in Feb, around then I think.

True, but looking at this from a very simplistic angle, if you were to triple the ratings to compensate for this, their top rated show would only get 4.5m.

Well, it just shows how popular its become and the regulars here post stuff about TV programmes coming up and how they affect the ratings.

Some people don't like it.

It's interesting to look at ITV1's ratings for the first 6 months of 2008 on a monthly basis. All hours shares:

Jan 2008 - 19.1% (Jan 2007 - 19.2%), Change = Down 0.5%
Feb 2008 - 19.0% (Feb 2007 - 19.7%) Change = Down 3.6%
Mar 2008 - 18.6% (Mar 2007 - 19.7%) Change = Down 5.6%
Apr 2008 - 18.6% (Apr 2007 - 18.8%) Change = Down 1.1%
May 2008 - 19.7% (May 2007 - 18.9%) Change = Up 4.2%
Jun 2008 - 17.8% (Jun 2007 - 18.8%) Change = Down 5.3%

So it's quite a mixed bag:

- May stands out as an excellent month with both a significant increase from 2007 and it was also the best absolute ratings month of 2008 so far. Helped to a large degree by BGT and also the Champions League Final.

- January and April only very marginally down on 2007.

- February, March and June down by larger amounts.

- June is ITV1's lowest rating month since August 2006 when it got 17.2%.

I doubt there would be figures to find for MotorsTV - It's a very obscure channel to say the least!

Question for rzt (or anyone else who knows).

In the weekly BARB stats, what constitutes 'other viewing'? Does it include watching something you recorded earlier or does that get lumped in with the channel it was recorded from?

I think it's the latter, but just wanted verification...

Just thought I'd post this here for any people interested about the FIVE corporation:

Home and Away will be taking a 3 week break from the beginning of August and will not air at all on FIVE or FIVER during this period. This is because in Australia the show is taking a break for the Olympics and the UK episodes are fast catching up and if FIVE don't take a break, we will be overtaking Aus episodes soon!

This will have a huge effect on particuarly FIVER which relies on H&A greatly and it will be interesting to see the BARB top 10 for these weeks as it is usually dominated by H&A and Neighbours.

People are also speculating on what will fill the 6pm slot and people are thinking maybe there will be a Neighbours 1 hour special, but I can't really see this happening. What do people think will fill this tough slot?

BGT was in June last year & May this year so that distorts things a bit. Plus BGT ran for 10 nights in a row last year in June.

I'm happy for the break as two of the weeks i am on Holiday.
If it is hour long Negibours it wont have a benefit on my when i watch after my holiday.

I'm also happy for the break because I'm going on holiday aswell and it saves me catching up afterwards.

TBH I can't see them airing 5 hours of Neighbours a week-a bit too much? ...even though it would boost FIVE quite a bit.

They could trial first chance Neighbours on FIVER?

The ITV early bulletin performs very well with the advantage of being before the BBC News and The Royal viewers will watch it because they'll miss the BBC News at 7:30pm.

The great performance of the ITV News in the 10pm slot just reiterates the fact that NaT should be on a Sunday and also shows how well it will do after a popular established drama like Midsomer.

Also adding those 2 bulletins to the BBC1 ratings for Sunday just shows how badly they performed and shows how most people stuck with ITV all night.
