Here are some things that Peter Fincham (ITV director of television) has said today and my opinions (long post!):
Quote:
“ "About a month ago, BBC One ran a series called Criminal Justice, stripped - we had a bit of a discussion at ITV - would we have done it? My view was yes, it was excellent drama."
"There's room for event drama," he says, citing the commission of Collision.”
Interesting- I can see ITV stripping Collision across a week. It sounds like a good drama, so it should hopefully do well.

“ Asked about Shaps' outgoing schedule changes - bringing back News at Ten and moving Corrie's Sunday outing to Friday - Fincham comments that Sunday has "opened up" to permit Saturday night entertainment shows to move across the entire weekend.”
I disagree. Apart from Dancing on Ice on Sundays, I can’t think of any entertainment show that’s done really well on Sundays. Beat the Star did quite well. And ITV haven’t actually brought in that mnay entertainment shows into Sundays- they’re now just showing Midosmmer Murders and Heartbeat. As for moving Corrie to 8.30pm on Fridays, it’s not benefited the soap that’s for sure. Having two double headers a week, has lost a good balance it had before imo.

“ "News at Ten's another story. Are we better with the News at Ten than the News at When? I think we are. Obviously we can't replicate the world when we had the News at Ten and the BBC had the Nine o'Clock News." He adds that having both choices at 10pm offers plurality but tacitly acknowledges that the BBC will lead in the slot. "We don't need to obsess about that. I'd rather have our premier news bulletin in a proper senior slot, so I think in that sense it's in the right place."”
I agree. NaT might be rating quite poorly in the slot, but it is better for ITV’s News branding. Ideally I’d prefer NaT on at 10pm everyday, but it’s ok as it is. It won’t ever beat BBC News or come close, but I think it’s better for the Channel’s image to have it.

“ Benidorm "is like a soap in the sun", Fincham suggests, characterising it as a "modern comedy" that built on the first series to deliver higher figures on its second series debut. "I think comedy on mainstream channels is perhaps the toughest genre."”
Yep- I really enjoyed Benidorm, and clearly many others did. One of ITV’s biggest hits of the year without a doubt. And I agree that comedy is the toughest genre- I can’t think of many new comedies in recent times to have become hits on either BBC1 or ITV1.

“ Fincham says ITV1 has "enough soap". "They are an extraordinary success story. The story of the soaps is of audiences having an extraordinary appetite for them and for that appetite to increase. I don't think it can increase beyond the current number."”
Thank god! If anything they need to cutback on soaps.

“ Fincham says 9pm "is the premier slot of the night where you want to compete and get up to 5m" and is his key challenge at ITV.”
Hmmm… Well, it just shows how poorly ITV1 has done recently in the 9pm slot, for Fincham to say that he wants upto 5m, which is low in my opinion. Obviously it would be an improvement, but I really think there’s an audience out there and if they get the programming right, they can get far more than 5m. In recent months, you just need to look at New Tricks, Bonekickers (even though it was apparently bad), Criminal Justice.

“ "We're looking for hit dramas. I believe strongly that we need returning series." He points to the Law and Order: London 13 episode commission as an attempt to give stability to the schedule. However he has "mixed feelings" about going from 6 to 13 episode commissions on a regular basis because it could reduce variety.”
I can understand his reserved judgements on having 13 episodes, because if it flops then it’s going to be a pain (like Echo Beach). But obviously it can go the other way as well. Furthermore, with 13 episode series, it would help global sales. It’s going to be really interesting to see how Law and Order London rates. If it does well, we could see ITV1 comissioning more 13-episode series aimed at the global market.

“ "Absolutely no decision on Harley Street - we'll look at that when we get to the end of the run."”
Based on the ratings, get rid of it!

“ Fincham cites family drama - Doctor Who, Robin Hood, Primeval - as an example of the new type of children's programming on mainstream TV.”
I agree. But for some reason ITV1 aren’t commissioning these type of shows. They only have Primeval, which has been a moderate hit. But when you look at BBC1, they’ve got a few with Merlin coming up as well.
