Its not too bad. Tuesdays at 9.00pm is after all quite a competitive slot - and I've read mixed reviews of this drama which I haven't yet watched. In theory it could very good in both dramatic and ratings terms. Or it might need bedding down in getting a second series - anyway we'll have to wait and see what the others got in comparison.

Yes, the figure itself is OK for Tuesday at 9pm, but with all the hype I expected it to break 5m, as ITV only got 3.4m at the time and Secret Millionaire dipped to 4m including +1.

Interestingly Broadcast said Mutual Friends started with 4.7 million and then in the final minutes it got 4.5 million.

Ratings from Broadcast

Quote:
“BBC1's new drama series Mutual Friends got off to a disappointing start last night at 9pm with an average audience of 4.6m (19.6%).
The first 60-minute outing of the Hat Trick production started off with 4.7m (20.4%) before remaining pretty much stable on 4.5m (19.3%) for the remaining 45-minutes.

The show starring Marc Warren, Keeley Hawes and Alexander Armstrong, which is being shown in Scotland later in the week, was down by half a million viewers compared to the channel's slot average for the year so far of 5.1m (21.8%).”

Any chance you can put the Equivalent for Sky News, so the two can be compared.

That's pretty consistent for a drama debut, some of ITV's lost over a million during the hour (The Palace went from 5m to 3.8m).

And as others have mentioned it faced some stiff competition from Channel 4 in particular, The Secret Millionaire has done really well for them.

But The Bill seems to get dented far more, it never beats Holby City in a head to head on a Tuesday night.

In the old days a rating of 5 million would be disastrous but in these days of multi-channel TV, and BBC2 & Channel 4 being much closer to ITV in the 9pm slot the rating is decent. As Peter Fincham recently said in an article, finding midweek dramas that can deliver at least 5 million are a priority.

Interesting things happening in the 8pm slot on Tuesdays in ITV1. I suspect they are testing a few ideas for when the Champions League football moves to Wednesdays. Send In the Dogs & The Bill both performed reasonably well & over time could build enough to win the slot. That might bring 9pm back into play for ITV with the right programme following on.

That's because Tuesday is Holby's usual slot, The Bill is in a different slot to its normal one.

I was one of the 200,000 that tuned out after 15 minutes. Not my thing.
