DS say 6.6, it must have got 6.645m or similar, rounding to 6.65m to 2.d.p, but 6.6m to 1.d.p.

Merlin didn't really dent the X Factor at all even with over 6m, so lots of extra viewers out there last night.

It probably got 6.647m, which is 6.6m (1 d.p).

Ah yes. I thought the raw ratings came in a format of 3 s.f. - didn't realise they could come in more!

The X Factor still remains unstoppable, totally unaffected by Merlin which is a surprise & ITV will be pleased that it was still the top rated show of the day & the week. The rest of ITV's schedule held up surpringly well imo. I didn't think YBF would top 4m up against SCD and FF did well do beat a show with a similar audience to it. Also It'll Be Alright On The Night performed surprisingly well up against Casualty. ITV will be pleased they managed to stay above 4 million in peaktime.

Great share for SCD, but the audience is a little disappointing I think, though it did start quite early. Solid start for Merlin and BBC1 should be pleased it pulled in almost 7 million up against one of the biggest shows in the country. Casualty still seems a little low, maybe people are getting tired of the depressive hospital drama. No ratings for Hole In The Wall I see...

I do think with many new/returning shows last night people decided to stay in whatever the weather.

The actual figure for Merlin was 6.645m... careful with those round-ups!

I could of sworn I saw 6.65 when I read the article, which is 6.7 million.

Strange that SCD peaked 5 minutes after the start so presumably viewers switched off. Very good rating for Merlin, I haven't seen it yet. X Factor did very well - there must have been 70% between BBC1 and ITV1 between 19.30-20.15!

However, the headline is 6.6m.

Yeah. But I think Neil meant that it was 6.65 rounded up.

No, its just huge for X Factor anyway and is roughly in line with what every other episode this series has got.

Perhaps a lot of viewers did what I did and just switched it on to see who was on it then turned it off again? That was about 5 minutes. Either way its going to be an interesting ratings battle between the two this year with X Factor going from strength to strength. It will probably drop to about 8m for the next 2 weeks but it always does for the middle stages.

What did SCD get for its first night last year?

The DS article says Strictly peaked at the end.
Quote:
“Before Merlin, the new series of Strictly Come Dancing launched with 7.99m (42.7%) over 80 minutes from 6.10pm. The audience climbed steadily from 6.41m (39%) at 6.15pm to a peak of 9.61m (45.6%) by the end.”

Neil, any chance for an X-Factor peak? Thanks!

So it did even better.

Good .

Not the biggest of Strictly fans (I think it's a little cheesey) but I do like it.

Yeh, it did well compared to last year. Out of all the series, it's the 2nd most watched opener. The 2006 series premiere got 8.8m (38%) - must have had a great timeslot because the share was lower than yesterday.

Yeah, it aired at 7.50pm, after the premier of Robin Hood, which got 8.2m at 7.05pm, which aired after an England Euro 2008 Qualifyer.

Well I'll hold my hands up and admit I was wrong. I thought Merlin would get slaughtered but it held up very well. The most interesting thing is that The X Factor still got 9 million, which shows that there are more people out there who would watch TV. So instead of similar shows competing against each other the networks should try and provide an alternative.

I thought Strictly would have done better but it would have done better had it been on later.

Are there any ratings for Hole In The Wall?

Merlin did very well in the face of the biggest rating programme of the moment-it would seem to have pulled interest from non X Factor viewers as X Factor has stayed largely unchanged. SCD did well also as the show started early in very good weather and peaked impressively not far short of 10 million at the end. Especially as the men/woman only shows arent always as compelling as later on.

I still think the Beeb should have given Merlin a freer run-putting it against X Factor wont change X Factors ratings-I reckon it could have got 8 million in a different slot. The show is good and deserves the best slot possible.

It goes to proove that the soap ratings fall in recent months, isn't necessarily down to a fall in terrestrial viewers.

The interesting thing is, the total number of people watching television yesterday between 7.30-8.30 was only 0.5m up on last week.

So, it's probably people who were watching multichannel tv last week tuning into watch Merlin. It's a great alternative to the X Factor. When the BBC and ITV get their programmes right, they can both definitely pull in big audiences at the same time. A shame it doesn't happen more often.
