If only he'd really tried! He was born to be a star, that man. That face and that personality! He didn't try at all and yet, just by delivering an extension of himself he created two of TV's most endearing and memorable characters and overshadowed the entire cast in his first big part. Think what he could have done if he'd really bothered. He was so incredibly beautiful and yet really manly! How often do we get that combination these days? I quite like Johnny Depp but I still think he's wet - and as for sweet baby Orlando, he's adorable; but, let's face it, the only reason you'd wake him in the middle of the night would be to give him his 2.00 o'clock feed!

Oh, Dirk! You wally! Come to think of it, if he'd really tried he could have been anything from a top sportsman to musician, doctor, lawyer... anything! (No, OK.. not doctor as he has such serious issues with them!) He could still be a top writer. He doesn't approve of populist writers, (he doesn't approve of anything much, really), but he's such a brilliant story-teller he could write explosive, top-drawer fiction that would wipe the floor with the pot-boilers on offer just now. Write, Dirk! You idiot! You're a dazzling writer - but you're 62 and the grave is yawning - in case you'd forgotten! You're cracking on a bit, honey! (Even if this is not readily apparent to everyone who sees him by virtue of his youthful mien. OK, he'll probably see us all out but he could gather a ton of ice on his wings. Sh*t happens!)

He's enjoying a very rich and full life but endowed with the embarrassment of riches he possessed and possesses in terms of ability, I would have loved to have seen him fulfil his promise in one field. Actually, I think acting is his weakest area of expertise but, given his head, he can carry the part by sheer force of personality - as did John Wayne before him. (He never played anyone other than himself - but Dirk is a great deal more likeable and attractive.) Give him something decent, someone!!! Quick!

Sorry about the diatribe, folks - but consider what might have been. If he hadn't been such a maverick.
