Hello, Bev! Nice to meet you - and as you're a fan of the new Battlestar, I'm delighted to read that the real Starbuck is a hit with you. Gorgeous, wasn't he? (And he still is, bless him.)
The character of Starbuck was written especially for Dirk by the makers of Battlestar. So much so that they fought tooth and nail against the network, ABC, in order to have him play the part. No-one else could play him - because, essentially, there was so much of Dirk himself in him and the makers loved that part of himself that they saw. The network wanted to insinuate their own choice into the part, (I'm guessing here but I'll bet they wanted Don Johnson), and filming had already started around the character of Starbuck before Universal won, due to the intervention of one of it's top executives, and Dirk was finally given the part that was his all along. In all, he endured seven or eight screen tests before ABC were forced to concede. He was the runaway hit of the show and utterly adored. And he still is. I hope I won't tread on your toes when I say that whatever Katie Sackoff is, she is not Starbuck.
The network never did like the character of Starbuck as he was totally un-pc. Dirk wrote an article that you've probably heard of, such is its notoriety, giving the reasons why Buckie is no longer a buck!
The initial series was horribly rushed and went to air long before the makers wanted. It's a shame that they did not have time to develop the storylines properly and that they did not have then the computer wizardry that filmmakers can call upon now.
I think the special effects in the new show are utterly superb but the show itself should never have attempted to borrow from the original. The ethos is totally different.
Hope you'll continue to pop in, Bev, and spread the news to the new Battlestar fans that Starbuck really was worth his salt.
