Sometimes it does still happen
I get so annoyed when teachers at school do stuff like that
It is hard enough for children to do their school work without the hassle of some teachers trying to force them to use the wrong hand for their schoolwork. They don't choose to be left handed.My son who is left handed and footed, had some teachers in the dinner hall trying to get him to use his Knife and fork the way they considered was the right way, it hassled him, but they put pressure on him, so that he had to do it. When I found out, I was not happy about it
