Gerry’s Adventures With Big Brother Part 1
Category: Blogging
Part 1 by Val Woodhouse
Gerry's been having a rough time in the Big Brother house recently, what with having to single-handedly stand up to Charley, vainly try to stop Channelle quitting, lose a potential best friend in David and now deal with his supposed friends Ziggy and Liam turning against him.
As we head into the final weeks of BB8, this occasional series will be looking back at Gerry's experiences in the house and how he got on with each of his fellow housemates. For all those times he's been labelled boring, tactless and arrogant, lets remind ourselves of the unique, caring, funny and downright brave Gerry we came here to support.
Gerry and Shabnam
I'll gloss over this one. They spent a week together. He nominated her. She got evicted. Er... that's it.
Gerry and Seány
Gerry had his work cut out as a housemate right from Day 1 - or should that be Day 10 - of the most contrived series of Big Brother ever. Rather than throwing all the housemates in together and letting a natural group structure evolve, 11 women entered on launch night and were given 48 hours to sort out their pecking order before an Alpha Male (Ziggy) was imposed on them.
One week (and an expulsion for racist language) later, two more men were allowed to enter the house. Not just any men though, these were to be the 2 gay housemates, Gerry and Seány. We had to wait another week for the next 4 straight males to arrive.
Presumably the producers' plan was for Ziggy to have his pick of the girls, with a fortnight's head start on any competitors, and Gerry and Seány to become the show's first gay couple (or, failing that, the more experienced Gerry to become a sort of sexual mentor for the recently-outed Seány).
At first glance, Seány certainly fitted Gerry's preference for fair-haired Celts. They shared a bed and indulged in an amount of kissing, cuddling and hand-holding, although as touchy-feely friends rather than potential lovers. Seány gave Gerry someone to relate to as a gay man and also someone who would happily listen to his tales of Ancient Greece (then take the mickey out of him when he started getting too serious).
Gerry had quickly established himself as the bookies' favourite for being an amiable eccentric. He and Seány had the makings of a unique and intriguing double act. Apart from one fatal flaw.
Seány was a jerk.
Seány's card was marked on his very first night, when he made the mistake of whipping the duvet off Lesley as she slept. As she had never busted a gut to try and enjoy her Big Brother experience, this was her final straw and she left the next day with no kind words for the Irishman. If she had stayed, her dry cynicism could have made a great foil for Gerry's intellect.
Seány tried too hard with his pranks, which was a shame as it masked his effortless wit and feelgood caring side. But it seemed that whenever Gerry was in a deep and meaningful mood, Seány was the complete opposite, which made Gerry one of Seány's favourite victims.
Seány pushed his luck one prank too far when he put a condom over Freddy the monkey. Although it looked a daft joke to anyone else watching, Gerry got quite upset by it at the time. Freddy was more than just a toy to him, it was the embodiment of all the friends and family he'd left behind.
The Big Brother audience is very intolerant of housemates who don't know their boundaries, and Seány was voted out after just 2 weeks, with a whopping 44.5% of the vote against Jonathan and Carole. Despite their differences, Gerry was deeply upset at the news and went off to cry in the toilet. Most of the other housemates were sad to lose him, too (although some had seen him as an easy target to nominate). Seány remains the most surprising eviction of BB8 and, thankfully, the one that received the best reception from the Friday night eviction mob outside.
Seány's eviction deprived Gerry of someone who could have kept him amused and brought the best out of him through the series. Although we were to see many other sides to Gerry's character, Seány's departure robbed Gerry of potentially his best ally of the series.
