Truely, mediocrity knows nothing greater than itself. Austin was a fine rugby player both for a great club and for England. All great sportsmen and teams have arerogance in them - look at Australians in just about anything, the All Blacks and South Africans in Rugby and great football teams in South America. Darren Gough was arrogant as a fine fast bowler should be - he was also a winner in SCD and one of the players who stood out in an England cricket team lacking ability in most areas - sometimes the only player who stood out. Great regiments, squadrons and ships from our armed services show arrogance and deserve to. High ability in an field of endeavour breeds arrogance.

Let's have a lot more arrogance, even if it is taken from one sphere such as rugby to another such as dancing. Let's applaud arrogance when it is justified and let's not let the mediocre dictate to us any more.

I don't know about smug - but he is definitely arrogant.

I know this from personal experience. He can be self-deprecating, but only when he has decided that's the best approach. He is also funny, which I think saves him from coming over as totally arrogant.

I think sports people do need to have a certain arrogance, but Austin always took it a bit far !

Having said this, I have not met him for a few years (probably about 3), so maybe he's calmed down a bit.

Having said all that - he was a nice enough guy - he could just be very annoying

I could cheerfully wring Craig's neck for 'introducing' this term at the beginning of this season! It's been leapt upon, adopted and over-used to the nth degree on these forums every since!

For the record, I don't find anyone on SCD smug or arrogant (which two words, by the way, mean exactly the same thing! Together with 'self-satisfied', 'superior', 'self-righteous', 'conceited', haughty' - just in case anyone is considering using any of those terms. Talk about redundant usage! It's like saying someone is 'smug' and 'smug'! Or 'arrogant' and 'arrogant'. Sorry, but it had to be said!).

Maybe we can find a new word. Or even not.

Labelling someone as being 'smug' or 'lifeless' or (insert insult here) is NOT commenting about their dancing ability. it's being personal about people we don't know, have never met, are probably never likely to meet (and probably wouldn't say these things to if we did! But if anyone ever does come face to face with any of them, then go on, I dare ya!).

I find myself, every year, utterly bewildered by unkind comments such as these. I don't understand why we have to resort to them and never will.

And I think it says far more about us as individuals than it does about those about whom we're making the comments.

What is the obsession with being smug and arrogant this year? It seems a celebrity can't be good at dancing without being accused of being smug and arrogant. I don't think Austin is in the slightest, I find him very entertaining and he is a good dancer.

I'm not sure I agree with you about the words being the same thing. My dictionary says smug - self-satisfied, complacent: arrogant - proud, overbearing.

So maybe Austin could be described as arrogant - seems a proud bloke to me, wouldn't say he's smug though as he doesn't seem complacent to me.

That's exactly how I see it too! Austin is in an intelligent, funny guy who is clearly loving SCD (Singing along AND shaking it to It's Rainging Men. anyone? ) and loving spending time with Erin!

I love him for loving it so much!

Can you imagine how boring this series would have been without Austin?

He got them all to dress up for the early group dance, this maybe caused them to bond so well.

Everyone is this year's series is lovely, but lots of them are very quiet.

Austin makes me laugh so much, he takes the dancing and the competition seriously but he doesn't take himself seriously.

He's humble, hard working, intelligent, cheeky and really enjoying himself. He translates that joy of dancing so well onto the dancefloor every week, I love to watch him and Erin whether they're dancing, training or being interviewed. They seem like genuinely good friends. She makes sure that she channels his competitive spirit and he has made her more light-hearted than I've ever seen her. Erin has a tendency to come across as quite serious, but this year, Austin has really brought out her sense of fun and humour and I've never seen her laugh or enjoy her dancing so much.

I think he's genuinely a really nice guy to have around. Every time you see him in the Tess pit, he's cheering and whistling for everyone else and he's genuinely happy for them.

He also never complains on camera about his injuries, he even laughed off dislocating his finger last night on the show! Often, he really looks like he's suffering and in a lot of pain, but he never brings it up, he just gets on with it.

One thing Austin is not, and never has been, is humble

(Not that I'm saying that it's a bad thing for him to not be humble, just that it's not really a word that you could use to describe him)

He is humble on SCD! IMO of course! He never mentions the 10s, it's everyone around him. Last week Tess asked him about being back at his place at the top of the leaderboard and he replied "It's not my place, it's definitely not my place".

He's not humble with regards to his talent, he's good and he knows he is, but he is humble about his expectations, if that makes sense. He doesn't take anything for granted, even when he was top of the leaderboard, you could still see his relief at getting through. If he was that arrogant, he'd just smile like well I expected that, but he never does.

And this is from a Welsh rugby fan who has wanted to ram his teeth down his throat on many occasions. I never thought I'd be sitting here talking about how humble Austin is!

I don't think Austin is smug or arrogant - as the series has progressed, his confidence seems to be falling if anything. Last night, he actually looked quite unsure and lost - perhaps because he had to follow Rachel's 40 dance?

Nope not for me either smug or arrogant.

Funny and taking the competition seriously but with joy yes.

Wish John Sergeant had told his fans all to vote for Christine Blakely to p*ss off the judges!
