I don't think I can choose just one so I'll be greedy and take three!

Viennese Waltz
Argentine Tango
American Smooth

By the way, can anyone tell me what are the differences between the Ballroom Tango and the Argentine Tango? Does the Argentine Tango have the same sharp head movements as the Ballroom Tango?

For me, the main difference is that ballroom tango is more showy, Argentine tango is more for the couple dancing than the audience. The hold is different, more intimate and close. There is a cheek-to-cheek hold as opposed to the ladies head being held back and left in ballroom tango. AT also isn't as "big" in movements.

Thank you, Emily. I've always wanted to learn and dance the tango, but my husband has a problem with the sharp head movements - he says they hurt and make him feel dizzy. But then since we'll only ever dance socially, I suppose we could quite easily leave out all sharp head movements without being pelted with tomatoes!

To perform or to watch?

I can't pick one, so I'll pick one ballroom and one latin:
To dance myself:
Waltz and rumba/paso

To watch (when done properly):
Tango and jive

Oh definitely. I dance and go to mainly social classes but also take private lessons. In my private lessons my teacher does put the emphasis on sharp, stacatto head movements and strong technique, but in my classes it's much less stringent and you could get away without doing that.

When we were going to classes and were learning the "social foxtrot" our teacher was including a spin, lady under man's arm, but I had just been ill and it was making me feel dizzier every time we did it. My husband said (during the dance) that we had better not include it any more as he feared there was going to be a loud thud (as I hit the floor!)

I must admit that if we're talking about dancing rather than watching then I would choose the Waltz and Rumba (as a representative from both disciplines). I have never learnt the paso.

Oh flip!! I forgot about the paso. I will have to revise my choices: -

Argentine Tango
Paso Doble
American Smooth

Mind you - as well as the sharp head turns, I couldn't let my poor husband try to lift me. Not without a hoist anyway!

My teacher has just included a rather challenging ronde in my waltz routine - me on one leg with the other leg supposed to be elegantly pointed while he does a run around for 2 bars - I've nearly gone flying on a number of occasions. And I have to go straight into it from a throwaway oversway. I have a week to make it look good- if I don't in that time it's going to be removed from the routine. Great though - I'd prefer that to simple steps - I want to be challenged.

We're still beginners. We'd love to be up to your level!

For me the jive, and more specifically Austin's jive!

I hate, hate, hate the rhumba!

The jive is the one that makes me want to learn to dance, love it. I also love a good paso doble - though done badly and I get very annoyed (my angry-at-a-bad-paso face is v. akin to Chambers's actual paso face).

Hate the Samba, never seen one I enjoyed. Makes me shudder and not in the good way.
