George Riley not on his usual shift on BBC Five Live this morning. Happy 31st yesterday, George. Caroline Barker (of BBC London) filled in.

I'm surprised you're suprised.
Think about which game is being shown live on Sky Sports! ![]() ![]() Nevertheless, regardless of them having Jack Bannister watching the England Lions-Australia match (wherever he may be watching it), given that they are licensed by the ECB which allows them to send a reporter to all England games, I was surprised they didn't send someone like Neil Manthorpe, Jon Norman or Mike Bovill down to Edgbaston to cover England's final warm-up. It will be interesting to see who talkSPORT use as their reporter on the Ashes Tests - will it be Jack Bannister, Neil Manthorpe or a combination of the two? Onto details from talkSPORT yesterday... Here's some details of reporters for this afternoon:
IRN SPORT TENNIS Wimbledon Women's Final: Dave Luddy RUGBY UNION 3rd Test - South Africa v British & Irish Lions: Simon Ward Dave Luddy has been doing Wimbledon reports during the week for talkSPORT and BFBS, so expect appearances again this afternoon. Simon Ward is also likely to appear on talkSPORT. Saturday 5th July Mark Saggers presenting with Jeff Probyn in the studio Third Lions Test, Johannesburg South Africa v British & Irish Lions, Ellis Park - Simon Ward Tour Match, Day 4 of 4 England Lions v Australia, New Road - Jack Bannister Wimbledon, Women's Final Venus Williams v Serena Williams, Centre Court - Dave Luddy And for talkSPORT today: Sunday 6th July Ian Danter presenting with Chris Sheasby in the studio Wimbledon, Men's Final Roger Federer v Andy Roddick, Centre Court - Dave Luddy Quote:

I would much rather hear a cricket specialist like Martyn used on TMS rather than some of the football broadcasters they are bringing through and will use on The Ashes. |

5 Live
Roddick v Federer - Jonathan Overend, David Law, Pat Cash & Michael Stich. Slightly strange split today, Jonathan did set 1, then David set 2. Jonathan did set 3 up to 4-3 then David took over until 5-3 in set 4. Jonathan then did the rest of the match. Barry Millns, Lee James & Barry Cowan commentating on World Service. |

That is an unusual split. I wonder why.
Thought the 5 live coverage was great this year as always. Worth remembering that Alistair Eaken was missing due to the Lions tour, so the number 2 tennis man was not present. Jonathan Overand is quickly becoming my fav radio commentator- would love his job! |

I suspect they may have done it like that so that Jonathan, as the correspondant got , to call Federer's moment of victory.
Overend has improved a lot since he started though I don't think he's quite as good as Iain Carter was when he was in the job. Good point as well about Alastair Eykyn who is an excellent tennis commentator, hopefully his rugby commitments won't mean to an end to his tennis duties and he'll be back for the US Open. |

First Ashes Test - England v Australia
BBC Test Match Special: Jonathan Agnew, Christopher Martin-Jenkins, Henry Blofeld & Jim Maxwell (commentators) with Geoff Boycott, Vic Marks, Ian Chappell and Jason Gillespie (Summarisers). Commentary going out on Radio 4 198LW, Five Live Sports Extra, ABC Local Radio Stations in Australia and online worldwide via the BBC Website. Blofeld is making mistakes galore. Just gave out the score as 247-5 than 241-6 when it's 241-5!! |

Blofeld is making mistakes galore. Just gave out the score as 247-5 than 241-6 when it's 241-5!! Geoffrey Boycott was up to his usual self by suggesting that his relatives' daughters could field better than some of the Australian squad. Last edited by Ian Cleverly : 08-07-2009 at 19:08. Wednesday 8th July to Sunday 12th July - talkSPORT First Ashes Test Match England v Australia, Sophia Gardens - Jack Bannister, Darren Gough (in-game updates), Dominic Cork & Ian Abrahams (previews from Cardiff). Scottish Open Golf Loch Lomond - Mike Bovill talkSPORT are providing good Ashes coverage so far, I must say I've enjoyed Corkie's contribution to the Breakfast Show. Although there's no sign of Neil Manthorpe yet, which is a shame. In addition to their Ashes reports, Danny Kelly is presenting an Ashes phone-in alongside Darren Gough at the close of play on Test match weeknights, during the first hour of the All Sports Show between 7-8pm. Elsewhere, I have not listened in to either station but judging from the BBC press release, Mark Pougatch is reporting from Cardiff for BBC Radio Five Live, with David Garrido providing Test Match updates for listeners to BBC Radio 1. I'm glad Pougatch is reporting on Five Live (where I don't have to listen to him ) rather than being involved on the TMS coverage, where he sounds so out of his depth. Let's hope it stays that way for the rest of the series. And I do feel sorry for David Garrido, having to put up with Scott Mills on R1! ![]() Quote:

If so, what did you think of it? Not a tennis fan myself but would be interested to hear views on their coverage as it sounds like they had a top team covering the Championships. According to their website, their presenting/commentary team included Nick Dye, Sam Lloyd, Gigi Salmon, Rupert Bell, Guy Swindells, Nigel Bidmead, Todd Macklin, Nadine Towell, Nick Lestor, Lucy Ahl, Judy Murray and Nick Bollettieri. Lots of familiar names to talkSPORT listeners among that list. |

Thursday 16th July to Monday 20th July - talkSPORT
Second Ashes Test Match England v Australia, Lord's - Jack Bannister, Darren Gough (in-game updates) & Ian Abrahams (previews and morning sports news). The 138th Open Golf Championship Turnberry - Rupert Bell, Bob Bubka & Sarah Stirk (reports). Anyone know anything about Sarah Stirk? She's not usually part of the talkSPORT golf team and I've never heard her on the station or anywhere else before. Shame talkSPORT no longer do live commentary on The Open. I preferred their coverage to that of Five Live to be honest, but live commentary seemed to go out of the window when Moz Dee arrived at the station last summer.

Thursday 16th July to Monday 20th July - BBC Test Match Special
Second Ashes Test Match England v Australia, Lord's - Jonathan Agnew, Christopher Martin-Jenkins, Henry Blofeld & Jim Mawell (commentators) with Ian Chappell, Phil Tufnell & Angus Fraser (summarisers). Alison Mitchell is the TMS roving reporter and Malcolm Ashton is their new scorer. No reporters from other cricket games have been used so far. Now that the day's play is over, from 7pm there are a number of other cricket broadcasts taking place on MW at the close of play. At the conclusion of Five Live's Open Golf coverage, Mark Pougatch is taking the chair at Lord's to anchor an Ashes Close of Play hour with Geoffrey Boycott and Jonathan Agnew among the guests. This is due to be followed at 8pm by the Phil Tufnell Cricket Show, an hour-long programme hosted by the former England bowler. Over on talkSPORT, Darren Gough - who is providing summaries at the end of each session - will be co-hosting an hour-long Ashes phone-in alongside Danny Kelly between 7-8pm. |

IRN details for the weekend:
Second Ashes Test at Lord's: Guy Swindells Open Golf at Turnberry: Rupert Bell. Incidentally, anyone who's missing the talkSPORT golf commentary of old may like to try "Radio Open Golf" from www.opengolf.com. The commentary is hosted by Ian Payne (from Sky Sports and ex-Five Live), and the commentary team includes Richard Kaufman, Robert Lee, John Hawksworth and Gordon Brand Jr. Nick Dye is providing the radio updates for the website. |

I really enjoyed Kaufie (as Bob Bubka used to call him) and Rob Lee's work on talkSPORT, and John Hawksworth was good on the BBCi coverage last year. Anyone listen in? Onto tonight:- As posted in the Football Commentators thread, Ian Abrahams has swapped Lords and the cricket for the Monday night horse racing meeting at Windsor. |

Sunday 26th July - talkSPORT
Formula 1: Hungarian Grand Prix Hungaroring - Graham Courtney Just on a sidenote, with the World Matchplay Darts final taking place tonight, it's a shame talkSPORT are no longer taking syndicated (IRN?) reports on the UK/Ireland-based darts tournaments which air on Sky barring the PDC World Championship. For many years they provided hourly reports on the UK Open, World Matchplay and World Grand Prix as well, but since Moz Dee arrived at the station I don't think they've covered a darts tournament other than this year's World Championship. Do any other BBC local/commercial radio stations still take darts reports on the major tournaments outside of the Worlds? |
