Seeing as once the ICC Champions Trophy Final concludes, the cricket season (both international and county) will be over, and that the rugby league season ends this Saturday night with the Super League Grand Final, would it be worthwhile to start a new thread to coincide with the start of rugby union's Heineken Cup and European Challenge Cup?

I agree. The honour should go to Jet2006 (the originator of this thread) or yourself (as the suggester of the new thread).

In that case, seeing as Jet2006 hasn't posted since last year and is now listed as an inactive member, I'll do the honours.

Wednesday 7th October - BBC WM

Mark Regan presenting The Football Phone-In, followed by Gurney & Wheeler with Rob Gurney and Dan Wheeler

Speedway: Premier League Promotion Play-Offs Semi Final First Leg
Birmingham Brummies v Kings Lynn Stars - Mike Taylor (intermittent commentary)

Football: FA Premier Reserve League South
Aston Villa v Wolverhampton Wanderers - Ish Sopal

In addition to tonight's meeting, WM will be doing commentary on the second leg of the Elite League Grand Final between Swindon and Wolves on Monday night.

I know, I've started a new thread for the new season, but seeing as it is still the 2008/09 season as far as speedway is concerned, I thought I'd post the coverage details in here seeing as I'm a bit of a stickler for that kind of thing.

According to this and this, George Riley, Stuart Pyke and Justin Morgan will be Five Live Sports Extra's commentary team on tomorrow night's Super League Grand Final between Leeds Rhinos and St Helens at Old Trafford.

This suggests David Oates will be reporting on the game for Five Live, as Dave Woods will most probably be commentating on the game for BBC TV's Super League Show.

Interesting to see that Pyke is in their team - as he's just finished commentating for Sky Sports on the Raymond van Barneveld v Jacko Barry match in the World Grand Prix darts, which is taking place in Dublin!

Did anyone listen to any of Five Live Sports Extra's coverage of the Super League Grand Final?

If so, could you confirm that George, Stuart and Justin were their commentary team as scheduled, and if they called upon anyone else (presenters, reporters etc)? Also, was David Oates reporting on Five Live as predicted?

According to 4-4-2 in the new season thread, Simon Ward was talkSPORT's man at Old Trafford for the Grand Final.

Well, it wasn't quite intermittent commentary.

Mark Regan crossed back and forth to Swindon for commentary as and when during his Football Phone-In, but once we hit 8pm and Gurney & Wheeler it was over to the track for full coverage on the speedway.

They didn't cut back to the studio from live coverage until just after 8.30pm - when a massive hitch hit them as their line to the speedway track completely died.

Nevertheless, WM soldiered on and after Dan played records and the usual features for a short while, they managed to re-establish connection to Swindon.

Rob's work for the night was over, but Mike was back to provide commentary via his mobile phone!

Thankfully, his line held up and we were treated to a fantastic night of speedway.

It was the first time I've listened to that sport on the radio and, unlike F1 IMO, it really worked well on the wireless and with the national championship on the line it was a genuinely exciting listen.

Congratulations to the Wolverhampton Wolves on their title win, and well done WM for their coverage - I hope Mike Taylor gets paid back considerable expenses as he must have run up a massive phone bill!

WM will be doing commentary on the second leg of the Birmingham Brummies promotion play-off in Kings Lynn tomorrow night, I'll tune in for a bit and post the coverage details here.

I can confirm Sports Extra's RL coverage was as you said. Stuart Pyke commentated on the St Helens possession and George Riley commentated on Leeds possession. At least GR didn't need to be back in London to do Breakfast Sport on Five Live. David Oates did report for Five Live.

Thank you for confirming that Ian.

With the Birmingham Brummies having lost their two-legged promotion play-off semi final last night, I think that pretty much wraps everything up for the 2008/09 sports season (unless anyone knows of an East Anglian station that will cover the Kings Lynn Stars in the play-off final!).
