Well i can honestly say, that's the first time i've seen a warranty seal say "Do Not Rip Off" rather than "Do Not Remove" LOL

Perhaps it also acts as a reminder to Retailers to actually reduce the VAT from next week instead of pocketing extra "margin"

JLJones,
I don't have one myself, I don't develop the boxes, that is done in Korea and I don't follow their every move. We have made them with 500GB in limited quantity, but no I haven't tried it myself, thus my interest in what others might try. But I don't say it will work because personally I haven't tried it and our QC team won't say "yes it works" until they have spent two weeks testing it, as we don't have any immediate plan to sell 1TB drives they can't tell me firmly enough to make a public statement. It might be spec'ed to 1TB but that doesn't mean it won't have unexpected issues. Bob |

That could result in an interesting court case.
Plaintiff; "But I didn't rip it off, Your Honour. I peeled it off slowly and carefully." Judge: "I find for the plaintiff. And I order Humax to honour the warranty." ).Three standard philips screws and the top was off - the hard drive is a 3.5" SATA (as bob_cat has already confirmed) - it's screwed into a plastic cage, the plastic cage is then screwed onto the motherboard with (at least) 4 philips screws. Didn't have time to take it further, and not sure if I will for the moment. Couldn't tell the make of hard drive - would need to remove the plastic cage to see that. |

As most things it will record for the moment will be SD I don't think I will worry about a hard drive upgrade till next year...
Perhaps when I get my second FoxSat-HDR. Automan. |

FOXSAT HDR HARD DRIVE UPGRADE 1.5Tb
Quote:
We can't be responsible for user upgrades, however I am aware that in principle we could manufacture them with 1TB drives. We sell them with 320GB because that is a price break-point at the moment for wholesale. We predict that to move at some point in Q3 next year but to maintain this price point we need to purchase the parts at the best price. I am actually interested to see what people do manage to achieve, but again Humax cannot endorse modification of the box as this will void the warranty.
Bob Edit: (SATA 3.5in) |

Jazz,
Sorry, I can't say as I haven't tried. In theory it can support large drives but it is mostly subject to performance issues. Bob |

The issues people may come against are what is the max addressing it will do. This can will be both the limitation within both the hardware addressing and what the software(firmware) has been written to accept.
I thought there already was a thead somewhere where they had already had carried out the upgrade and were recommending which drives.(or was that removed?) I can see myself looking at some point when 1tb drives come down in price to think of doing this. But at the moment 1tb 32mb buffers are still 80+. I would be concerned in getting a 8mb buffer as suspect this would cause to much latency between the device and the drive. But who knows !!!! |

No need for a bigger hard drive!
Personally I just can't see any point in putting in a bigger hard drive because I would end up with even more programmes that I don't have time to watch!

Bob Edit: (SATA 3.5in) Unauthorised electronic modifications yes, but a straight plug and play swap of the hard drive for a PVR specific model, no. What is anyone supposed to do? I bought my PVR in mid to late November 2008. My hard drive is already 96% full with material I don't want to delete but save for future viewing - I have 21 films, 4 animated films, 7 programmes and about 3 series folders. I'd say thats a pretty average type of library. As a result, I've just bought a 1TB WD drive specially designed for PVR's and intend to install this ASAP and then transfer my existing recordings back via usb. I understand the price point which is fair enough, but to then penalise people for a straight plug and play swap is unfair and bad business. Its like penalising you for putting extra memory in your pc. This is the hard drive I purchased for mine, I think others have swapped for this one before. It is sepcifically designed for PVR usuage: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/produ...88&language=en |

Hi Bob, your the man who may know the answer to this, will a 1.5 Tb hard drive work as a replacement? web link http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/15TB-...-Cache-NCQ-OEM
Set top boxes aren't listed in the recommended applications. Better to go with a dedicated set top box drive in my opinion. |

low cost drives
Some Tesco stores have at the moment a 1TB IOMEGA USB external drive for under £69. That is close to the cost of bland DVD*Rs of similar capacity.
It'll need reformatting (as sold is NTFS) but once that is done to ext3 it works nicely with the HDR. The drive inside the case is a SATA Seagate (and the "1TB" is a Seagate terabyte - about 6% less than a "real" one). That's cheaper than buying the raw drives. |

There are several of us who have replaced the internal HD with a 1TB WD (there was a thread, but can't find it now!). I've had no issues, works perfectly and was easy to change. The reason I did this, was because I realised recording HD would require much more disc space. I accepted that I risk voiding the warranty at my own risk.
...just found the thread... http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s...php?p=29516433 this is the one I used (1TB WD10EVCS), but you can now get it cheaper elsewhere.. http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1TB-W...rpm-16MB-Cache |

I've fitted the non-AV 1TB WD10EADS in my HDR and it just works fine (not that I've filled it up with many recordings, but I am slowly copying back 450Gb of recordings from the old HDD to the new, so when this is completed then it will give the drive a good test!)
Would anyone like to try the new 2TB WD20EADS (that is if you can get your hands on one) in their HDR? ![]() http://www.channelregister.co.uk/200...wd_2tb_caviar/ |

The reason we can't endorse the upgrades officially is that we cannot be sure of the level of competency of those doing the upgrades and we cannot be responsible for any side-effects of using a drive that we have not tested. We spend a great deal of time testing each new drive that we use, even a new design for the same capacity from the same vendor would require many days of in-product testing to ensure it didn't affect the operation of the product.
Consumer electronics is not like the world of the PC, consumers are a lot less tolerant of foibles and will blame us if something they tried to do didn't work, even if we didn't say it was possible or advisable. Bob |
