Has Strictly "Jumped the Shark"?

Jumping the shark is a colloquialism used by TV critics and fans to denote that point in a TV show or movie series' history where the plot veers off into absurd story lines or out-of-the-ordinary characterizations, particularly for a show with falling ratings apparently becoming more desperate to draw viewers in. In the process of undergoing these changes, the TV or movie series loses its original appeal. Shows that have "jumped the shark" are typically deemed to have passed their peak.

So the answer is no.

Hi Somerset,

There have been many many threads on this. At no point have the BBC said that the Sunday show is live.

For example the opening VO on Sat is "Live from London" and on Sunday it is "From London". It has also been said many times on ITT by guests and dancers that it is recorded on Saturday. So it is well known.

Two things that might confuse are that Tess wears a different dress (it's a different programme) and that people refer to last night. That is because they are talking to you in television land where the show they are referring to was seen by you last night. The people in the studio are perfectly aware that it's the same night but the fact is that it's a television programme and not a televised event.

Hope that helps

Yes, that really irritates me!! All the references to Sunday and we all know it is taped on Saturday evening! I remember when Tom was getting married on SUNDAY and yet on the Sunday night broadcast, there he was standing merrily in line for the Result Show.

I think the fighting between the judges is just dreadful. They all seem to bad tempered, especially Len. Perhaps he should decide which show he was to be in Dancing with the Stars, or Strictly as he obviously cannot cope with jetlag. I have seen a few Dancing with the Stars programmes and notice there is no screaming fights or over the top nasty vile comments to the competitors. Perhaps the American audience would not put up with that kind of behaviour. Now that John and Kristina are gone there is no FUN in Strictly as they are all so desperate to win this plastic glitter ball!! It used to be a great Sat night entertainment for charity and now that has all changed. I am tired of the Z list celebs all trying to use the show to make a comeback!! I found it irritating in the Children in Need programme when every star that appeared had to get free publicity for their, panto, book signing, new record, etc..... Obviously nobody does anything free anymore.

They do not try to fool anybody, they just take into consideration it will be broadcast on Sunday. I do not find anything irritating about it.

I didn't bother watching the show this weekend and just caught up with the dances on You Tube - and I'm usually a Strictly obsessive. Some of the sparkle has been tarnished this series and although the show is still entertaining, it's stopped being must-see TV for me personally.

I think the JS debacle this year puts SCD in danger of jumping the shark, but I don't think it's jumped it already. And as said elsewhere, I don't think that is the fault of JS or the judges or the public. It's the fault of the producers.

I wonder if that means they will stop asking older people to take part in SCD and concentrate on younger ones with enough physical power who actually have a chance to make it to the final.

Iplayer transmission, just like ITV and FM Classic, is not available outside the UK for legal copyright reasons.

Well this weekend saw JS waltz away into the sunset, Jodie sent home to her sick bed and, on x-factor, Rachel was sacrificed for yet another bland band. I don't care particularly for anyone on IACGMOOH this year so i'm a bit buggered to be honest!
Woe is me etc...
Good job its nearly xmas and we can have the champion of champions show (I hope)

No, not at all.

I found the first couple of weeks the worst and nearly gave up because I thought the atmosphere coming from the show was so forced and unpleasant. This series also hasn't been helped by the papers trying to create a race row by insinuating voters were being racist because two black dancers got voted off, and the papers just trying to stir the pot in general whenever possible.

But things improved, eventually, and now that the John Sergeant farce is over, I feel I can really sit back and enjoy the remainder of the competition.

It still hasn't been my favourite series though. The celebs are good and there's not been anyone I've really disliked, but I do feel like the sparkle of SCD has started to fade. I think the show has become too "big", if that makes sense. There was no need to increase the number of couples, and no need to screw with the format (if it ain't broke, don't fix it) do the God-awful girl-girl, boy-boy weeks in the beginning, which was so tedious I nearly gave up on the series completely.

I wish the producers of this show would go back to the less is more approach. I don't like the idea of SCD being a "franchise" type thing but that's what it's starting to feel like and the magic is dying as a result.

I don't think SCD has "jumped the shark" - yet - but if it keeps getting too big, it will, soon.

Yup, that sorts out that TV quandry. Now to JTS X-factor... no, that's too big a thread to start!

Cheri certainly had a chance to make the semi's if not the final. John seemed to lose interest after a couple of decent dancers and preferred to become the People's Princess - sorry Champion - rather than putting the effort into a good performance

After this week?

Yes. Absolutely.

Im not talking about the John Sargeant incident - that was always going to happen, but about two other incidents. One is the JJ and LG general bleating about Cheri. This isnt some wunderkid whose career has been halted by a pantomime of evil judges, but a woman who took herself seriously enough to believe she could win despite the fact she couldnt dance latin.

...and then... Jodie getting booted off in the, quite frankly, biased dance off, where the couple going through seems to depend on which pro the judges 'like' the most.

What this has left us with is the most uninspired final set of celebs in Strictly history and what'smore they are all there with the judge's seal of approval. And here is the line up that the show wants you to believe you want to see:

Austin 'Im a boring family man' Healy
Rachel 'Somehow Im even more boring than Austin' Stevens
Lisa 'Plank of wood, but still here on the back of some massive favours, mostly from CRH'
and two others, who despite being in a prime time show for 10+ weeks, I cant remember who they are. Or is it three others?

It wouldnt have jumped the shark if it was a public decision that these were the celebs that we wanted to see, but there have been so many engineered decisions this year that the show is basically ignoring the phone polls - and that is basically crime number one for shows like these.

In all of the comments that she made, I didn't get that impression at all.

And in life, belief in yourself, and a belief that you can do the impossible, is sometimes what separates the successful from the also-rans.

Last season, big personalities such as Alesha, Gethin, Matt, Letitia, Kenny, Kate, Penny, Dominic and Stephanie were enjoyable to watch.”

^^^ I agree ! There was a time when I would never miss a show ! Now I don't really care ! In fact I normally visit this section late each Saturday night to see who got kicked off....last Saturday I didn't bother and it will be the same this Saturday !! My interest has gone !

The judges have spoilt it this year for me...they seem to think they're the stars ! Also in pervious years there's been someone who has either improved and done very well (Darren Gough, Matt Dawson) or someone with a sence of fun and a personality like Alesha...this year for some reason the public voted for John Sergeant.

Since John has gone my interest has gone !
