Quick Home Cinema Question
I have an amp (Pioneer VSX-D712) which states to use speakers with a nominal impedence between 8 and 16 ohms.
I want to get some speakers (ELAC Cinema 1) which has a nominal impedence of 6ohms, but does state that they can be connected to amps between 4 and 8 ohms. Basically, I just want to know whether I will be OK with this setup, or whether I am likely to cause any damage to the equipment by not matching the impedence perfectly. Any responses will be greatly appreciated |

You could use the speakers but I wouldn't recommend it. The lower the impedence rating the louder the speakers will be but they take a lot of power from the amp which can get very hot and damage it. Keeping the volume down will stop this happening but it's hard to judge wether or not you are overdoing it. It would be even worse with 4 Ohm. I would stick to 8 ohm speakers as they will match virtually all equipment with no problems.

However in practice the impedance of speakers varies widely with the sound source.
I would try them at out and if they sound OK with clean undistorted sound, you won't do any harm to the amp. |

Thanks for your help. As it was when I went into the shop to get some yesterday, they were running Elac speakers on a lot of their amps, many of which didn't match the impedence, and they told me that they have never had any problems with doing so (and no, they werent just telling me that to make a sale, they have been more than helpful, even slated their own brands!!)
