RCE DVDs
I have a question about RCE DVDs.
I have seen some R1 DVDs that are RCE encoded. Does this mean that they will not play on a multi region (R0) player? Will they play if you change your multi region player from R0 to R1? Thanks for any help. |

You could always just try borrowing an RCE disk and test it (Columbia releases are a safe bet). If you get the world map then you're screwed. Sort of... If you do get problems then mostly you just need to set your player to R1 first - on autodetecting multiregion players, load a normal R1 disk first and you should be fine.

RCE stands for Region Coding Enhancement. The theory behind the madness is that R0 players will not play discs that are for region specific players (ie RCE protected Region 1 disc will only play on a Region 1 defined player, etc)
However, in reality this only affects a small number of older players that are fitted with Mod chips (the RCE confuses the chips) and some finicky booting players. There are various work arounds if for some reason your player doesn't accept the disc. Have a look here for a list and more info: http://www.dvdtalk.com/rce.html |

So basically, if a R1 RCE DVD does not play on multi region player then change the DVD player settings to make it a region 1 player and all should be fine?

Just to agree with the above, the RCE system only seems to cause trouble on some of 'auto select' multi region players, but not all of them. My Pioneer 717 in 'auto' mode happily played RCE disks with no problems, as does my newer denon A1.
Other forums all indicate that manual region selection seems to overcome any RCE problems. |
