IIRC in terms of the effect of smoking on lung capacity, smoking doesn't ACTUALLY make that much difference. At least until there's a chronic smoking issue going on too causing coughing etc. However, what is significant and potentially very risky is the impact of exercising coupled with smoking and the resulting increased release of free radicals in the body.
I remember when i first found out some of the pro's smoked i was quite surprised and it was for this reason,i thought that smoking in any degree would affect the lung capacity ??

I always think of the pro's at almost sort of athlete level certainly during their competitive days if not quite now......but their level of fitness is still obviously very high.

I always thought smoking would affect them somehow ??

Mind you it didn't affect Matthew last year ........he worked himself into the ground for that win.

Has anyone won SCD that eats Coco Pops everyday for breakfast ? I am sure the extra sugar content of this cereal would hinder any contestant as they try to dance around the floor

LMAO!

No it does not. Smoking is harmful to the vocal chords and if you offered someone like Christina Aguilera a cigarette you'd get smacked in the face with it.

I can remember an interview with Kiri Te Kanawa a few years back where she was asked "What one thing would improve the quality of your life?" to which she replied "A world-wide ban on smoking".

She's obviously one hell of a pwerful woman as she's more or less got her wish now!

Total rubbish! Go on, present one piece of evidence to support that ridiculous statement!
Over the years I've seen many rock/popular singers quoted as saying that smoking has 'improved' their voices in that it gives the voice a more gravelly timbre. The only one I can actually name has having said so was Joni Mitchell - she said that smoking eradicated the little 'girly' sound in her voice.

I also recall Eric Clapton saying that heroin had improved his voice. Quite how that works I have no idea - he was probably off his face when he said it.

The negative effects of smoking can take years to come to light and some people arent ever effected at all. Think George Burns who lived to 100 despite smoking a dozen or so cigars a day.

Didnt Sally Gunnell smoke when she was competing?

I'm not advocating smoking by any means, just pointing out its effects are generally of a long-term nature. Being unfit and especially overweight is the bigger problem nowadays - not that the pro dancers need worry on that score

I remember years ago hearing Kim Wilde say that smoking cuts the ability of a singer to reach several notes at both the top and bottom of their range.

Off topic I know but I've always thought it strange how many doctors and nurses smoke though. I'm really struggling at the minute persuading a 17 year old son to stop smoking before he's addicted and he keeps telling me about Premiership footballers who smoke and are at the top of their fitness. WTF??

Smokers do have a very unpleasant smell and it'd definitely put me off. You can tell almost instantly the moment they walk in a room. I'm a bit too sensitive. when I was living in student accommodationas I can smell people smoking on ground floor when I was in third floor. Anyway, smoker will definitely off my favorite list. I can imagine how difficult it must be for the non-smoker to be partner of smoker, it must be like hell, espeically they have to be so close. I remember Claire King mention that Brendan commented on her smell of cigarette, I won't blame Brendan for a second even if this is true.

I think it would depend on how much they smoke and how old they are. A young person who smokes occasionally would not find it difficult to dance.

I didn't know Rachel or Matt di A smoked but I doubt they smoke a lot.

It is possible to avoid smokers' stinky breath. A fastidious smoker will take great pains to eliminate any smell of stale tobacco.

I think Len smokes!

probably does, but probably cigars instead

well accordin to someone else, rachel smokes or used to about 60 a day!!

most of these people that have been named on here (mainly pros) probably dont smoke alot a day, probably just a couple here an there, as they are not pysically restrained

This is a myth perpetuated by smokers, no doubt. The smell can be masked, but not eliminated. Chewing gum etc. only places an overtone over the rancid breath.

I read an article last week in either the Times or Observer that went backstage on SCD reherasals and mentioned that both Lisa and Claudia W smoked.

A slightly unusual topic but light refreshment after all the antics at Sargeantgate.

i remember a thread like this about dancing on ice, and it seems alot of professionals of any kind of performing like, acting, singing, dancing etc. seem to smoke.
It's quite astonishing how many performers smoke - I think it's probably because it's still seen as quite theatrical and glamorous.

Or perhaps because they have a lot of pressure on them to perform and they get very stressed?

When I was at SCD last year we spotted Len outside with the smokers, can't remember who else was there though.

Smoking or not smoking is your own choise, for the dancer or the celeb for the winning SCD has nothing to do with smoker or non-smoker, what and who's the best dancer that's will be the winner of SCD
Alesha, Heather, Kelly Brooke were the contestant whose are non-smoker, you can see their skin, how smoother they are even on youtube vid,

I think it's interesting, given how physical dancing is. You only have to watch Lisa's panting after the quickstep!

Lisa was supposed to have quit, so it seems she has gone back on it. I think I read somewhere that smokers who do a lot of physical exercise (like dancing) sustain less overall damage than smokers who do little or no exercise, but they still sustain considerable damage over time.
