Does anyone know which supermarket sells this cheese as there is a lovely recipe for it in the Guardian Weekend supplement but sadly does not mention where the cheese can be bought.

We don't have any ethnic shops in town so it is very annoying when products are difficult to locate.

Could you substitute feta for it, mashing it up, perhaps, with a little milk? Having looked it up, it seems to be similar to feta. I've never seen it in a supermarket.

Thanks I guess you could. Or Halloumi I suppose.

I've just had a look at the recipe and it looks like halloumi would suit it better. I can't get hold of Jerusalem artichokes, ever, either!

Halloumi has a very different texture to Manouri so I wouldn't go with that - a reduced fat feta would just about work although then take out any extra salt in the recipe; otherwise if you can get Anthotiro or Mizithra they are both much closer to Manouri. Waitrose are a good bet for one of them if you're near one, or a Greek / Cypriot deli.

The article suggest haloumi or a goat's cheese (I've never had it so have no idea):

Goat's cheese is closer - halloumi once cooked, although lovely is nothing like it although would also be nice. I like most cooked cheeses though!

Isn't it also hard to get Vegetarian versions of these cheeses though?

Feta listed here:

Halloumi here: http://www.21food.com/showroom/72095...mi-cheese.html

I'm sure there are more.

(But I'm not as scrupulous as I once was about it).

You may want to try a deli rather than a supermarket. or see if there is a local farmers market.

Thanks for the advice.

I can't travel out of town,so I am stuck with what I can buy locally or on the internet.

Annoyingly we have no delis or ethnic grocers in my town apart from one Polish shop which has gone spectacularly bust.

Farmers market,is every tuesday but you need a car to get there which is annoying and they don't deliver.

I can sympathise. We have a deli but it doesn't sell anything much different from a supermarket. Actually, there's a new one I've just remembered, which is slightly better, but it doesn't sell that wide a range of cheeses. We had one cheese shop combined with a cafe that opened a year or so ago but shut fairly quickly.

We do have a mini-Chinese supermarket which is wonderful but I wonder how long it will last (it's lasted two years or more so far) and a greengrocer which has a small sideline in ethnic foods (not fresh).

We also live in the heart of a farming community, in what used to be a market town, but there's no proper farmers' market, just a few stalls selling olives and feta and stuff on a Saturday and the occasional over-priced French market.

I really miss a good market.

I've never thought to have it with nasi goreng. Might give it a go!

That might work if you drain it. Can you still get curd cheese in the shops in England? That's pretty much the closest substitute.

Ooooooooh! Merci beaucoup! I will try it out. I guess ricotta or any curd cheese could also do.
