Speaking of power cuts, anyone had one whilst its been recording? I'm tempted to record a random program (that possiby is repeated later on) and pull the plug for a minute or so part the way through to see how it reacts. I suppose if it was really clever it may detect a repeat showing and schedule that.

That is exactly what I did, although granted the box was already in a state of confusion because the HDMI interface was not up!

I might be able to answer that last one if my 'problem' is due to lost signal.

On a few recordings from BCC HD when playing them back on a couple of occasions and just at one point in the playback the picture will freeze for a few seconds, then blank and the Humax blue info screen will pop up to say 'This channel is encrypted or is not transmitting' or something like that. It will display for a few seconds, then the recording will recommence, from the point it stopped at, seemingly without loss of continuity.

It may be the hard drive? Or temprary loss of signal while recording and on playback it spaces out this 'blip' while displaying it's message? Signal strength and quality is very high as I have a1.2 metre dish with a .2 dB LNB. Anyone else had this experience?

I had an unexplained occurrence a few days ago which would have resulted in a missed recording had I not been there to see it.

The Humax had come on to record a 2hr film at 17:00. I witnessed this happen and, as usual, the box woke up at 16:45 and the REC indicator appeared at 17:02 (both pre- and post-padding set to Auto).

Another recording was due to start at 19:15 and I didn't actually see what happened at 19:00, but at about 19:08 I noticed that the box wasn't showing the time. So I thought, "this is going to miss a recording".

Sure enough, at 19:15 nothing had woken up, so I manually brought the box out of standby. As soon as the boot-up had completed the REC light came on and it recorded the programme, missing the first 30 seconds or so.

Now, I want to know what happened when the first recording ended at 19:00. Because the film recording started 2 minutes late but lasted 118 minutes, it must have finished at 19:00. So why didn't the box remain 'on' and wait for the next recording at 19:15?

Going back a few steps to when we were talking about upgrading the supplied disk to a 1TB. I now have the Samsung drive as recommended by Paul, but still have some HD recordings on the original drive which I would like to keep on the drive and maybe play back sometime in the future.

So my question is, has anyone replaced the original drive with a new one, made recordings on it, then changed back to the original drive and been able to play old recordings OK?

I know this should be OK, and I have done the same thing with other Satboxes, but with a couple of my old Humax CI 8100 PVR's they did not accept an old drive again (the FAT seemed to have got lost) and I had to reformat them again before they would work.

Apologies if this has been mentioned already. I did search for a bit but could not find any mention of this particular issue.

The created thumbnails are only being spread over the first couple of minutes instead of equally over the whole recording. Anyone else notice the same?

In a more roundabout way I have. I have removed the drive and connected an external e-sata caddy. The drives can be swapped with the power off and the original and a new 1Tb drive both work fine. It takes seconds to swap the drives. One word of caution, the programme schedule is stored on the hard disc so don't schedule the recording and swap the disc before it's recorded as it won't know your recording is sheduled. With the foxsat off you can also access the hard disc over usb from a computer and transfer files (even HD enc ones)

Yes I have...but quite honestly I cant be arsed peering into these very tiny thumbnails to find a place. Does anyone seriously use them as a useful aid.

Now that's interesting. About the PC-transfer.

I always thought there were maybe some additional (peripheral) and maybe 'hidden' files that don't perhaps appear in the filelist view on the Humax but are essential to the playback of programmes, similar to the HiDef camcorder files with Panasonic cameras.

So was not sure if files could be copied off the in-situ disk and then copied back to the Humax later for playback again? is this what you are saying?

I suppose I should just try it out for myself!

Failure to record in series mode.

On Zone Reality yesterday I set the HDR to record Bondi Rescue - entire series.

Yesterday it recorded both programmes OK: 4-4.30 and 4.30-5pm.

Today it indicated it was recording the 4-4.30 programme but nothing was subsequently found on the hard drive. It never even attempted to record the 4.30-5pm prgramme despite being set for and indicating in the schedue a series recording.

I have an optical audio connection from my Foxsat HDR to my Panasonic home cinema.
All the SD channels are about the same volume, but when I switch to BBC HD it is deafening!
Have I screwed up the Dolby settings or something? Any suggestions?

It's just because it's Dolby digital on the BBCHD channel. Your other channels aren't Dolby digital, so the volume level is different on your AV receiver. You can probably change the default digital vol on it.

It's much louder on my system as well. Dolby Digital from the Foxsat is a lot louder for some reason. DD probably has a higher dynamic range than mpeg with most extension at the higher frequencies. This may explain why the volume sounds louder. This effect was used to make adverts sound louder until the practice was outlawed

Where should I look for altering the default volume for that channel? I can't find anything relevant in the manual. Nor poking around with the menu and settings.

The volume button on the pvr only works to adjust volume on the non dolby digital channels. On BBC HD the volume only serves to work as a mute button.

Why not set the pvr volume to max, then use your AV amp to change volumes. This way you wont get the jump up when you switch to BBC HD

On my old SKY+ box, pressing the red button on BBC and then selecting the weather allowed me to see the latest video weather report but with my Foxsat HDR box all I get is the static information.
Is this to do with the Foxsat not supporting the BBC iplayer yet? Or is it a Freesat problem?

You'll have to look in the manual for the AV receiver, not the HDR (you can't adjust it on the Humax).

The BBC engineers are still working on the News and Weather Multiscreen system. It works in a totally different way to that on Sky, which has required a complete rewrite of the application.

There would appear to be a small bug in the naming convention used for storage of series recordings.

I set a series record for Horizon on BBC 2 and the first recording was called 'Horizon: Do You Know What Time It Is?' This was stored in a folder called 'Horizon_Do You Know What Time___'. A later programme called 'Horizon: Allergy Planet' was recorded and stored in the same folder: 'Horizon_Do You Know What Time___' and it would appear that all future programmes will be stored in this folder whose name is derived from the first programme.

In this instance, although a little annoying, this might not cause too many problems as the series title, 'Horizon', is incorporated into the start of the folder name. With series such as ITV's 'Tonight' there may well be significant problems as the individual titles usually incorporate 'Tonight' at their end rather than their beginning and so the name of the folder initially created may not contain the word 'Tonight'. This would lead to a folder with a name with no connection to its contents.

My personal preference would not be to use folders for storage but simply allow recordings to be saved at the same level and be sorted chronologically by broadcast date, broadcast channel or alphabetically by title as at present. However, if the present arrangement must remain, and even if it can be 'fixed' to avoid the problem I have outlined, then perhaps storage without folders could be made an option?

SD quality looks better from the Hard Drive than watched live.

I'm unable to explain why but as everything's the same otherwise I'd have to lay blame on the box. I'm presuming something in the live side of the firmware needs tweeking. The difference isn't massive but is noticible - less noisy and possibly a little sharper from the hard drive.

My box is connected direct to the tv with HDMI.

Sound bug

Found a new sound bug yesterday.

Was watching Freesat tv live with sound through the optical to my receiver (Onkyo 605) and picture to the tv through HDMI.

I decided to switch back to tv sound instead of cinema sound (only put it on to identify what sound type a programme was being broadcast in).

When I switched the receiver off, all the sound had disappeared from the tv from the Humax via HDMI despite all the volumes being turned up.

I had to reboot the Humax in order to get the sound via HDMI back.

Wow White Knight, that is an observation and a half, but, one that has got me intrigued. Is this noticeable by simply watching something live then rewinding for a few seconds and watching again (off the hard drive)?
