It is specification HDMI-CEC which is the means of signalling HDMI in version 1.3 etc. This is NOT Sony specific.

It should work on most modern equipment. Just because it doesn't on SKY is not surprising.
See Bob's answer too, but in fact it's rarely implemented properly. As a custom install professional, I don't actually need a lecture on how HDMI connectivity is supposed to work, I thought I'd help you out by telling you how rarely it works in practice, and that most 'same manufacturer' combos of gear stand a much higher chance of working than any other group of parts. If they are meant to be talking the same language, some people's gear speaks Geordie, and others speaks wiltshire. No rhyme or reason to it, we always turn it off. It's not a Humax bug, it's an HDMI bug.

Thanks for all the info

Here's a Summary of what we know (some guessed - any contributions gratefully received.

On One Cable (looped)

Record two in same group (uses both tuners for recording)

Watch any channel on same transponder as either recording tuner

Record two channels on same transponder (one tuner required for recording

Watch any channel in same group as recording transponder

On two cables (guess work here)

Record two channels in different groups (2 tuners needed)

watch any channel on same transponder as either recording

Record 2 channels on same transponder (1 tuner)

watch any other channel and record it (guess)

Record 2 channels on same transponder (tuner 1) and record 2 more channels on same but different (or same) transponder (tuner 2)

watch any other channel on same transponder as tuner 1 or 2

Two issues I've noticed.

1) Find a programme in the EPG, say Strictly on BBC HD. Press OK and you can choose to record, in HD, and you'll be asked if you want a series link. That's a lot of OKs, but fairly straightforward.

Press the Record button to set a record timer directly, and you don't get any of the other prompts, including the series link. I can see the logic in not bothering with the 'watch or record' and 'SD or HD', but I do think it should ask about series link, or have a setting to choose the default, rather than just creating (as you can verify via the Schedule list).

2) A compatibility issue; I usually run HDMI sources through a Thor HDC100 switcher. The HDR displays its splash screen on power up, but then the screen blanks and doesn't come back. Something's getting through though, because if I use the Vformat button and select 576i (which my Humax TV doesn't support), I get an 'out of range' message on the screen.| This happens whether or not the HDCP default option is enabled or disabled. Plug directly into the TV and it works fine.

And now I think I've broken it

Recording BBC HD, I decided to work through a few other channels to check my Unicable installation is behaving ok. E4 came up on, but switching to BBC2 took a while to lock on to the signal, and now the box is entirely unresponsive - the picture's fine, sound's fine, but it responds to neither the remote nor the front panel buttons, including the power button.

Guess I'm stuck watching monkeys for a while...

Did a non-Freesat scan and discovered when switching back to Freesat mode it had deleted all the scheduled programs? Not sure whether it's a bug or a annoying feature.

Most likely because channel numbers could be all over the place after such a scan, so might not be consistent with any scheduled recordings already set up.

Maybe the HDR does not support SCD after all?

Well, that, obviously, is the big caveat; at the moment, in a spirit of thorough enquiry, I'm operating it in mode that's not supported by the initial setup wizard, and for which you have to delve into hidden menus. So, in that regard, any info I post won't necessarily reflect what people with more conventional setups are seeing.

It'll still be jolly interesting though, honest

The HDR can only understand "USB mass storage devices" with FAT file systems or perhaps Ext2 (untested by me). Some memory sticks aren't true USB Mass Storage devices so I don't recommend their use in general. I have seen about half of USB Flash sticks aren't compliant.

Bob
Thanks to Bob and others in the thread for advice. After a lot of playing, I have discovered that the front USB port seems to be the problem.

I first tried a USB stick in both ports and got nothing (obviously non-compliant) and after that assumed that the device was the problem and carried out testing with various devices in the front port only.

Eventually I tried one external drive in the back again and saw a "device connected" message (and could copy recordings) for the first time.

So it looks like I could have a dud front socket.

I still haven't found a way to do a software update, despite: trying a manual update with the FreesatOAD transponder; tuning to that channel before updating (in non-Freesat mode of course) and moving the cable to LNB 2 -- has anyone managed to update with just one feed from the dish?

Aha that will be why I never recorded that movie on film 4 last night I was fiddling about in that menu.

Sounds like it might be a wise idea to leave ordering the Humax for a while after reading this thread lol

That's interesting I read a posting a while ago that said one of the usb ports was not designed for archiving but rather for factory and service access. The other was for archiving. At the time the front port was designated as the archive port and the rear for service. Looks like Hunax have swapped them round for the release version

Page 61(pdf page--60 manual page) of the manual refers to USB 1 & 2 as storage devices.

I think the servicing was on the non HDD HD

Where can I get a copy of the manual in PDF format?

I've tried Humax downloads but the HDR is not on there.

Thanks.

.... still waiting for Santa.

The biggest problem I've found so far is with favourites. I can add and remove channels from my favourite lists, re-order the lists, rename the lists, etc.

All this seems to be in vain though because you can't enable favourites (there's no mention of how to do this in the manual!).

I was expecting to have the ability to enable a favourite list and have the channels restricted to only those in the list when changing channel, pressing guide, etc.

I find it quite annoying having to flick through channels I have no interest in, surely this is a big oversight on Humax's part?

Is that a bug?

I haven't even been able to order one. I must be the captain slow of online ordering....

Thanks Gaseousclay

Unfortunately I can't seem to complete the download of that manual. It always downloads about 2.37MB (page 24 or so) then it hangs.

Tried just about everything but it still won't complete.

Tried entering the first parts of that link but I just get garbage on the page.

I am frustrated enough with waiting for the box and really need the manual so I can set up my connections etc in readiness to 'plug and go!' I also never use the hard-copy manual and always use the PDF versions, so will need one regardless.

Is there any way you could e-mail me your PDF copy?

If so, I will private message you with my e-mail address.

Many thanks and no worry if you can't do this.

.... frustrated.

In the manual it states that LNB1 is rated at 250mA and LNB2 at 500 mA. Why then does it tell you to connect a motorised system to LNB1 ?????? I wonder if there is a misprint and LNB1 should be 750 mA?
