Tried just about everything but it still won't complete.

Tried entering the first parts of that link but I just get garbage on the page.

I am frustrated enough with waiting for the box and really need the manual so I can set up my connections etc in readiness to 'plug and go!' I also never use the hard-copy manual and always use the PDF versions, so will need one regardless.

Is there any way you could e-mail me your PDF copy?

If so, I will private message you with my e-mail address.

Many thanks and no worry if you can't do this.

Doubt you will find anyone has a mail server that can handle 3.68Mb. You need a direct transfer using Skype or Windows Messenger or similar. If you pm me a Windows Live Messenger Id I will give you a ring on it

Hotmail accounts are 10MB surely everyone has a hotmail account for guff use ? My mailbox is unlimited, 3.68 MB is nothing nowadays.

Thanks James and others for offering.

Now downloaded.

Disappointing that setting a series link reservation will automatically create a folder for the recordings, but after you delete the recordings the folder remains - and the only way to get rid of it is to go into the file manager interface.

Either:

1) It should go automatically when empty (or at least ask you if you want to delete)
2) You should be able to delete an empty folder from the media menu
3) You should have the option to not create a folder when setting a series reservation

Thanks for that, I was wondering what your plans were.

Back to the bugs, has anyone managed to get around the single cable upgrade problem?

Highlight the folder you want to delete, then press the red button.

Oh, the other thing that's highly, highly annoying:

you can't delete anything if it's recording.

So, if you have a lot of recordings going on, you get a build up of more and more stuff, such that you might potentially run out of space.

And you've got to mentally keep track of all the things you've watched / want to delete, until the box allows you to delete them. Or rename them!

imho, that behaviour really needs to be changed.

Yes, it leaves a lot to be desired - in many ways its worse than my ancient Sky+ box (and yes, that is probably in part due to being so used to using the Sky+ box)

My current gripe list:

- takes 30 seconds to switch on

- can't set favourite channels for the epg

- not obvious what has been viewed (I did notice an icon by something I'd viewed, but the next-to-useless manual sheds no light on what the icon means and another programme I'd just viewed didn't show this icon) - using Sky+ you got a simple list of everything that had been recorded, clearly showing what had been viewed making deleting old recording very quick and easy)

- deleting items is slow (several button clicks and a couple of second wait) and can't be done while recording

- the remote is very poor (directional and poorly laid out, eg tiny play/pause ff/rew buttons)

On the plus side I like the fact that you can see what reservations have been set in the epg (would be nice if it indicated an alternative showing was set to record and if a reservation is part of a series though)

Hopefully future updates will improve some of this

(And no I don't regret buying it, but a few simple changes would make a big difference to usability)

But it does only use 1 watt (so they claim) in standby which is a lot less than any other such device on the market.

I have not tried it myself but I think in the setup menu you can disable the low power standby which may improve the boot time.

BTW, I think items that have not been viewed yet have "New" on them (simple view mode only).

You lose all of your scheduled programs if you delve into manual tuning in non freesat mode.

I tried that on my non HDD Hd box, it made no difference at all

In simple view (the text list), there's a small (and not that easy to make out on a CRT!) "New" icon next to unseen recordings.

In normal view (with thumbnails) the unseen programmes are coloured purple rather than blue.

not much good if you're colour blind

The colour difference is quite subtle too on my set.

I'm surprised that the box doesn't overlay a 'new' icon over the thumbnail. It does this with a little red and green record and playback symbols.

I guess the colour-blind would have to make do with the simple list view? (Though frankly that seems more usable to me anyway.)

Very annoying-
Pressed subtitle button yesterday and then took them off.
Now, whenever I press the guide button the subtitles return!
Take them off again, press the schedule button and then press again to go back to normal screen, and subtitles appear again!
Take them off again using sub button, and the BBC news comes on at six and guess what-subtitles appear again!!!!

Apart from that the only problems I'm having are a lack of thumbnails and of course the E-OS error mentioned above.

Of course, having old software may not be helping! Is a CHANGELOG for the software available anywhere online?

Apart from these problems it's a fantastic box ... going from a standard Sky box and a VCR, the HUMAX is so much better in virtually every way ... and the picture (and EPG) looks great, even on my cheap CRT TV.”

You have to format USB drive as a FAT(default) or it doesnot appear to detect it.

Transfered recordings are in .TS format.

I have just managed to upgrade the hard disk in the unit from 320GB to 1TB with no problems.

Existing drive: Seagate pipeline 320GB

New Drive : Western Digital WD10 EVCS serial ATA.

Upgrade is very striaght forward, fan and HD is held within plastic caddy. Remove caddy screws x 4, then swap drive.

When you power up the unit it detects new drive and asks you to format it, 5 mins later job done.

975GB for video/radio and 25GB for photo/music.

Now you have a bigger drive you can allocate more space to photo/music.

To do this the drive needs to be formatted again, so therefore suggest this is done after upgrade to aviod losing recorded items.

select: menu/system/hdd control

format HDD

select both video/radio and photo/music tick boxes

enter pin

you then get a sliding bar left to right on the hdd allocation, this is simply moved to select the amount you require, select ok, hdd formats again, job done.

I set mine to 50GB for photo/music which should be enough.

Hidden Menu :

menu/system/diagnostics

then

red green yellow blue
green yellow blue

Some interesting stuff in here !!!

( be carefull what you select !!)

Finally,

As for bugs ( well not really a bug, more a pain. )

I Set the unit to record the football last night, box gave option to record in SD or HD. Set HD option.

ITV it would appear did not transmit the football in HD only SD, therefore box never recorded anything !!!

One might say that the box is working correctly, it is, however it would have been nice for the recording to drop back to SD as the HD was cancelled.

This will be one to watch out for with future programs.

Fabulous, very interesting. Anyone have a link as to where you can get a cheap one that will work?

Fantastic let us know how it goes, this looks like a really good upgrade path. If only Humax sold them like this, as an optional premium model, as IMHO its needed for HD recording - I would happily pay the extra.

Thanks for the response. As documented elsewhere, I have now been able to use a USB hard disk, but only when plugged into the rear USB socket.

I'm (probably optimistically!) hoping that the front socket comes to life when I eventually manage to get the software update!
