I have a single cable at the moment so am unable to update. It's a known issue and Humax hope to have an answer for those of us affected next week sometime.

Hi. I’ve been lurking here for several months, waiting for a Freesat PVR to come out. Must say it’s a great forum and it’s been very useful to me.

It’s a shame that my first post should be somewhat negative, but the Humax HDR problem with updating from a single LNB feed has set off alarm bells in my mind. No doubt Humax will come up with a fix in time, but will it be a real fix or just a work-around? There’s one question, in particular, that I think needs addressing.

Does “Factory Reset” restore the software version to the factory installed base? If it does, the fix may not be a permanent solution. To be permanent, the fix would need to modify the factory default. Unless there’s a means of doing this, any fix (other than by returning the unit) will just be a work-around that will stop working when a “Factory Reset” is applied.

If the answer to this is not good, and you haven’t yet bought one, it may be worth waiting until Humax release hardware with the problem fixed in the factory installed software base. This may also be prudent even if you have a twin feed. It may need to be used on a single feed at some time in the future and could be out of warranty by then. I can imagine several reasons for this. Personally, I will probably take the chance - when I can get my hands on one!

It really is ironic that Humax dropped the ball so badly on this one when it seems the HDR is so good in many other ways. It could be argued that the only function of the factory installed software that needs to work properly is the ability to do an OTA update during installation.

But resetting the machine will not involve an automatic installation of an old firmware. Humax will probably need to make the single LNB updating fix available for download or deal with it via a simple swap out through their warranty service maybe. It still needs to be OTA though as like you say, what if one day your machine happens to be on a single feed again.

Maybe I'm just an optimist, but I think you're worrying unduly. Humax seem to think they have a solution for this and I'm not sure I'd have waited even if I had known about this before purchase.

I'm pretty sure that a factory reset will keep the most recently downloaded software. (I assume that it is 'flashed' and replaces the firmware in the box.)

It's also entirely likely that the update problem is itself a bug in the software which may have already been fixed, or may get fixed in the future; if so, once these first boxes are updated the problem hopefully wouldn't occur in any circumstance.

I also thought somebody said on a thread somewhere the empty folders got deleted in the early hours of the morning when it is doing its housekeeping. I still have Hollyoaks and Buzzcocks empty folders in both the Video and Radio section. I know it did it's housekeeping because new recordings have there thumbnails.

I suppose to install a newer version of the software which with luck will support single lnb updates one could take your box to a friend or your retailer who does have dual lnb feeds.

Are you recording a series or just a single item ?

I've just gone to the Radio tab into the file manger and it showed all my series linked folders with a zero next to them (file manager from the Video tab displays them with the correct number in).

I'm wondering whether it stores Radio recordings in a different format but as they are in the same partition as the TV recordings I'm wondering whether the zero next to the folders is how many radio recordings there are as apposed to TV recordings.

I might try and record a radio program and see if the file manager displays this under Video tab with a zero.

Hollyoaks later finished last night. I watched the program live, deleted the recording and the series link, so by my reckoning the folder should have been deleted.

That would be the "good answer". At least as far as this problem is concerned. But it brings its own risks, especially if the user has no control over updates. A corrupt software update (possibly due to power failure while the memory is being flashed) could render the unit unusable It's this that made me wonder whether the original load would be restored during a factory reset.

This brings me to another question. Is it possible to disable automatic OTA updates. With a new product they are definately needed but, after a while, the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" rule could kick in. If I'm not interested in the new features, I don't want the new bugs. I'd like to chose which updates I take and when I apply them. I live in an area that is prone to storms and the power-cuts that go with them

Further, if I can persuade others to wait a while before buying, I might have a better chance of getting one myself

Like many others I assume, you could wait until most of the worst bugs are resolved over the first few months and then assess how risky the purchase is then. If you buy now you will be nervous about being an unpaid beta tester.

That wouldn't help with unwanted updates when the product is stable, nor with the box chosing to do an update when there is a Force 10 blowing outside.


I've done some beta testing in my time, although I'm fairly selective. This is a box that I would be happy to beta test (if only I could get one).

I suppose we won't know for sure until someone who has updated the software has to perform a factory reset for some reason. Maybe if someone has done this they can report back whether the update had to be downloaded again.

As to the OTA updates; I don't think you need a way to turn them off. When the box detects one on startup (I have no idea how often it checks...), it asks if you want to update. If you say no, the box doesn't keep asking.

I would quite happily be an unpaid beta tester for boxes like this! Humax? Humax?!

I can understand though why expectations are a bit higher now that the box is released.

Hi, Had still a series link for Gordon Ramsays Cook Along so I deleted the reservation and the folder was still present. So I went into Filemanager and deleted the folder using the Red button. It went disappeared from both Video and Radio sections

If folders have files in them it shows them in the correct section (Video or Radio). When they are empty they appear just as empty folder and as such appear in both sections as they now have no content to identify them. Just a thought ?

That figures; more reason for the system to hide them until they have content in them again IMHO.

No the update does not need to be downloaded again.

If I've understood you correctly, that is a very effective means of achieving what I would like. But I might have read more into what you said than I should. I think the following behaviour would be almost ideal.

1) It never does an automatic OTA software update without obtaining permission first.
2) If you decline an update, it will never prompt for that update to be installed again.
3) If there is a subsequent update, it will prompt for that.
4) The latest update can be installed manually at any time (if not already installed).

I say "almost ideal" because of what may happen if it's not me who turns the box on when it gives the prompt

As far as I can tell, this is what it does -- I was prompted during initial install and I think once after that when I turned the box on ... but I haven't been asked again (a good job or it would be really frustrating...).

Yes a manual update can be initiated at any time from the menu.

I have no solution for the 'someone else gets there first' problem!
