Not happy. I wanted to be different with my Bearded Dragon!

lol

No wonder .... they're worse than rabbits!

With one male, and three female, corn snakes ... I managed to hatch around 60 baby snakes one year! You can produce them like wildfire in captivity. Take away the factor of the eggs that wouldn't survive in the wild and you get a lot baby reptiles very quickly.

Not all species obviously, but the common ones certainly.

I think it's good to see personally. They are easy to keep ... IF ... you do your homework first. (Discovered that the hard way back in about 1990 ... rip psycho, my first snake)

Absolutely. If you're going to get something unusual (apparently not that unusual anymore!) the PLEASE do your research.

Surely the best way to get over your phobia is to get one!

Seems a bit dubious to me. I know of no one that owns a reptile, yet I haven't got the fingers to count the amount of dog owners that I personally know. Not saying that reptiles and amphibians (the article seems to want to lump the two together...) aren't getting more popular, but I'm fairly sure that some statistical gonads has been applied here. Then again, my "evidence" is more anecdotal than anything, so maybe I need to get out more.

I second this! As I child, I was terrified of dogs. I hated going to the park incase I saw/heard one. If I went to someone's house and they had a dog, I'd practically climb on top of my mum's head to be as far away from the dog as possible!! I now have a puppy and I adore dogs - all dogs. Since I got my dog, I've been a lot braver and I'm less reluctant to stroke other dogs etc. When we first went to dog training school, I'd leap a mile in the air if a dog barked loudly but, by the end of the training sessions, I didn't bat an eyelid. I'm 100% over one of my biggest fears.

I wish I could. When I was going to Oz I went to a hypnotist to get over fear. It didn't work - as I nearly had a nervous breakdown when I finally saw said snake. Even if I see one on I'm a celeb I have to look a way. Its quite pathetic really

Until couple years ago, I was part owner in an exotic pet shop dealing in reptiles, arachnids, amphibians and loads of animals inbetween.
Bearded Dragons are very common as a reptile pet .. you hould have gone for something a bit more unusual and cheaper to keep like Uromastyx .. (sp is naff) dab lizards is common name

But the thing with reptiles is people tend to have more than one .... often waaaaaay more than one!

Most people that have a dog just have one.

The article the OP linked to is talking about the number of animals, not the number of households that keep them.

On households, I suspect dogs would still show a higher number.

Personally, I had 7 adult snakes on the go at one point. I currently have 3. (I was up over 60 if you include all the baby ones in the peak year! But that was too much ...)

oh thirded! you described what i was like with dogs until we got loki! except yorkies, my aunt used to breed them so i quite like them. we went to a local town last weekend, and they had huskies and the most ENORMOUS malamute's in the precinct. normally i would have been pressed up against the shop windows to get as far away as possible, but i was up stroking them, the kids were stroking them, and one of the huskies was even permited to lick my hand lol. the biggest malamute started to bark when i was stroking it - the huskies started barking at a passing dog, and he decided to show off as he was very loud and gruff! - and instead of bolting for the hills, i calmly removed my hand and sauntered off was SO PROUD!!! and this fella was bear-sized!

Yup.

I use a few forums online where some of the members have entire rooms dedicated solely to their reptile keeping habits.

I never got *quite* that extreme but a fair percentage of our spare bedroom was filled with vivariums at one point.

OK, I take your point and can see where the numbers are likely to come from. Mind you, the article still lumps amphibians with reptiles, but I won't get too picky.

I think it's a case of, if it's not furry and runs about in a wheel, but it mainly lives in a tank without water in it, we'll lump it in with the reptiles.
