Having said that the dancing involved in singing groups is not necessarily useful, it does seem funny to me that all the girls from these groups have proved to be very good dancers. Not knocking any of them, as I'm sure it's remarkably difficult to produce a non-sports background celebrity without some element of dance training. Lisa and Tom have also had some experience too.

I don't think bopping around on a pop video prepares you for a gorgeous foxtrot!
I would say Tom has had dance training though. |

And when it comes down to it, most celebs have some sort of advantage in one area or another, it's just that those advantages tend to even out: Actors can "act" the mood of the dance, they can more easily be specific characters Sports people have stamina and that competitive spirit Comedians are used to performing in front of an audience which might be less than receptive to their efforts (for audience read "judges") Presenters/news readers are likely to suffer less from nerves should things go wrong, and are used to things being "live" Models should have a grace and a posture and be able to carry off different moods Some contestants might have combinations of the above to a greater or lesser degree. |

I'm tired of hearing this. Everyone has an advantage. I'm actually quite sick of hearing "Austin is a great dancer despite being a rugby player" - his footwork is so excellent BECAUSE he was a rugby player. If he couldn't be nimble on his feet after playing that sport, he wasn't very good at it.
I agree with the post above explaining why everyone is at some kind of advantage. |

The fact that they have had some form of training could be cause/effect: they are stage performers so elrmentary training is perhaps part & parcel of that. A singer must have some sort of musical timing (although with some of today's crop that could be questionable) so it is also reasonable to suggest that they also have an understanding of body rhythm.

Excellent post!! Not least because it saved me the trouble of typing out the same thing (probably in a much less coherent manner!!)!

I would say Tom has had dance training though. Rachel's so-called "previous dance experience" is simply contemporary, with possibly a bit of ballet thrown in, but that'd only better the posture. Going from Modern/Jazz/Tap to ballroom is like taking a flautist and asking them to play a double bass - as one myself, I know I couldn't do it! |

I thought it was interesting when Matt Cutler was asked the question of if having someone who's danced before even if it wasn't this type of dancing is easier to teach than someone who has no dance experience whatsoever and if he said yes they were which struck me as particularly honest because it would have helped his cause that year more to say no.
That said I'm not sure I'd use the word unfair advantage - musicians have musicality, sportsmen are used to training hard and dealing with set-backs and tv presenters know how to project themselves to get the public to like them so everyone starts with some advantage. |

If Rachel had an advantage at the beginning from previous dance training say the process of learning a dance of being in a studio etc etc then they have caught up now anyway.
