Just purchased a 320gb box from Laskys for £209 and upgraded with a green WD drive. Really simple! Did anyone else notice that there were no warranty void stickers on the box anywhere?

Mine had a "warranty void if removed" sticker over the join. to the backplate.
Hair-dryer removed it easy enough though.... (mine is one of the original batch, and is just about 2 years old now, so warranty is expired anyway)

Hi – long-time lurker needing help please!
As the warranty has just expired on my Foxsat, I tried to install a WD10EARS 1TB drive this morning. When I switched the box on, it hung on boot. Tried various tricks found on the forum, but no good. Opened it up, switched on again, you can hear the HD spinning up but won’t get past boot. Put the old 320 back in – works perfectly!
What am I doing wrong please?

Think that's what wd call an advance format drive and also parks its head all the time, plus as a desktop drive it has error checking which proper av drives don't. You want to avoid all these things and get a wd certified av drive or seagate pipeline drive.

Can someone who's done the upgrade tell me how they copied over the HD programmes that are on their original internal Humax drive.
Do I just connect the internal drive to a sata usb caddy, and if so is there a menu on the foxsat to copy from the external usb drive to the internal?

Atm I`ve got 2 external usb drives on my foxsat, 1 formatted to ext3 for my HD archive and one FAT32 for my SD archive.
The SD external drive is now sitting at over 80% and the Foxsat internal drive is at over 70%, so I really want to upgrade the internal drive to a 1gb, or maybe even higher if higher capacities work reliably in the Foxsat.

The problem is that I have some ITV HD recordings on the internal drive that I cannot transfer to an external drive, hence my question about how to copy files over when I do the upgrade.

I think you can only achieve copying the HD files (assuming the no copy flag is set on tile on the HDR) on a PC by placing the original and replacement dives in caddies and copy them across (using ext3 support by an add-on). I have never tried this but I would assume it would work.
It would be much faster is the caddie has and was connected via an esata connection.

For some reason when I tried to copy my SD and HD files from the old drive to the new 2 Gig drive using two caddies and Unbuntu on a PC it refused to allow me to copy them as they were 'private' files. Gave up and did it the long way using a USB caddy on the Humax.

I too did it the long way too, using a USB caddy on the Humax.

I moved all my programmes into one folder and did it all in a oner, overnight. Although it was still copying in the morning

I think it must be possible - root should be able to do anything - I don't know unix but someone who knows what 'private files' are and how this is indicated (and changed) please post.

I may be imagining it but wasn't there a way of putting the old 320 drive, into an external caddy, in parallel with & connected with same connectors as the internal drive, to get the HDR to use both drives for recording & playback?
Maybe also doing intercopying?

Or was this the secondary job of the tooth fairy ?

Removing the old 320Gb drive & sitting it in a dual bay caddy alongside a new, pre-formatted 2TB drive, then linking the caddy's SATA drive to the HDR's internal SATA connection could be interesting.

Originally I thought that that could provide a quicker way to copy files from old to new drive.

Would the HDR recognise the 2 drives or would it see just a composite drive, perhaps with a partition ?

Another concern was that a badly chosen 2Tb drive might cook the HDR.
In an external caddy any overheating could be avoided or at least localised.

If all was well the 320Gb could go & be replaced by another 2Tb to get enough recordings to take into my pyramid to enjoy in the afterlife.

If you PC/laptop has an ESATA interface I'd go for on of those. They usualy have a USB connection.
You can copy from the extrenal drive to the internal on the FoxSat, but not necessarily the other way round in HD.

Possibly we are at cross purposes.
All the caddies I saw seem to have SATA connections to sit the HDD on but have a flexible lead out which is USB type, which would not connect to the leads inside the HDR, that originally attached to the HDD

Are you referring to to a lead out which is a SATA. (or should that be eSATA?, is is one the male & other the female side of the connection)

I have run a 1.5Tb PC drive for nearly 2 years in my Foxsat, you have a faulty drive, get it changed!

I did a search for SATA caddy
SATA and eSATA plugs are basically the same - SATA has an L shaped plug while eSATA is I shaped.
The cables are all the same sex.

A SATA to eSATA connector should connect inside the FoxSat (I haven't tried it btw) and to the adapter.

I have 3 of these, the first is used for the internal drive and connected by the esata cable provided. The second by usb to the rear usb port. Both have WD 1TB drives in normally but the original drive can be used in either caddy. The third is connected by esata cable to my desktop, which I boot into Slax to access any of the drives used with the hdr

I have just ordered 2 caddies, & presume that, after formatting with Linux, the WD20EVDS can receive the old recordings from the old 320Gb, if I sit both in caddies USB attached to a Linux enabled PC.

Yes you can transfer the files using a PC, however if you have internal drive mounted in an external drop in cradle you can format new drives up to 1TB using the hdr. This makes the two drives interchangeable.

Transferring files, USB'd into a PC, between 320 GB & 2 TB drives was impossible with this chopped down Linux. Sad, 'cos I'd bought a 2nd caddy just for that. Perhaps I need to learn about a fuller version of Linux.

Formatting the new 2 TB HDD using gparted-live-0.7.0-7.iso proved a new puzzle.
I clicked on "Partition" & selected "New"

This produced a warning:-
No partition table found on device /dev/sdb
...partition table required before partitions can be added

It asked me to click "Device"---> Create Partition Table.

The default is to create MS-DOS partition table.

I clicked an "Advanced" button which then asked me choose between,
msdos, aix, amiga, bsd, dvh, gpt, mac, pc98, sun, & loop.

No one in this thread seems to have mentioned this before, so I concluded that what is now the default was previously the ONLY option, so chose that & eventually it all worked well.

Also off-putting was gparted's use of MiBs instead of MBs a reversion to using 1000s instead of 1024s.
It also puts MiMs,GiBs & Tibs into the same column of partition sizes. care is needed to match.

The allocation tables on both old & new 2TB HDD held some surprises. All values in GiB

I'm wanting to format an external drive to use via usb on my fox HDR.

The whole linux/ext3 formatting thing doesn't thrill me.

Can the HDR format a virgin drive that is plugged into the usb socket?

Alternatively, if I put a larger internal drive in and formatted it as an internal drive, would that same drive be readable by my pc if I swapped it out again and put it in a caddy?

Lastly, if I did that and put my original drive back in, would it still work and retain all my original data?

If you attach a new HDD to a HDR USB port it checks the formatting & if it isn't EXT2 or EXT3 it gives you an error message to go & format it.

If you install a new HDD into the Sat box it will, i'm told, format it for you as long as its not bigger than 1 TB.

If your new drive is > 1TB then you have to format it with linux.

You don't have to install Linux, it works well from a DVD in your PC disc drivethat runs Windows. People seem to use "Ubuntu" or "gparted" which are free, downloadable, truncated versions of Linux

Yes you can format a 1TB drive by temporarily connecting it to the internal connections. After format choose to format both partitions and reduce the photo/jpg partition to it's minimum of 1GB. It will now work in an external caddy (If you copy videos to the video folder in the 3rd partition it will be usable as an internal drive. Replacing the original drive will restore everything to normal (the recording schedule is on the drive).

I have a 1TB in an external slot in cradle as the internal drive (esata connected), and a second cradle with a 1TB drive as the external usb archive. The two drives are interchangeable as is the original 320GB drive. Swapping drives into the internal cradle of course means you have to recreate the recording schedule.

Small points from the above post, only EXT3 or FAT drives are accepted (EXT2 will not work)

You would need to install Ext2Fsd to read (and write to) the Ext3 file system the HDR uses.
